Fast Facts: The 2022 Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse East Coast Championships presented by Dubarry

In town for the Maryland 5 Star? Don’t miss out on the 2022 Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse East Coast Championships presented by Dubarry which take place alongside the prestigious event October 13-14 in Elkton, Maryland. Formerly held in the Saw Mill Field at Fair Hill, the 2022 YEH Championships have been relocated on the show grounds just beyond the infield in the Timber Field to make it easier for spectators to enjoy the fun!

The Field:

• There are 56 young horses contesting the Dutta Corp. USEA YEH East Coast Five-Year-Old Championship and 39 in the Dutta Corp. USEA YEH East Coast Four-Year-Old Championship.
• The first and second place horses from the 2021 Dutta Corp. USEA YEH East Coast Four-Year-Old Championship, HSH Best Kept Secret and Undercover Quality, are both returning this year in hopes of carrying on their success in the Five-Year-Old Championship

• In addition, nine other contestants from last year’s Championship also have their name on the roster to compete in this year’s Five-Year-Old Championship.
• There are three former FEH East Coast Championship competitors who are giving the Dutta Corp. USEA YEH East Coast Four-Year-Old Championship a go for the first time: Arden’s Noblest, Dark Angel D’Avalon, and Magnific C’Imagination.

• In the Five-Year-Old Championship, the Anglo-Arab gelding owned by Kelli Temple and bred by Katja Muller A-Debussy Royale (Adzaro de L’abbaye x Zorosa) had the highest qualifying score qualifying score having earned an 86.7 at Waredaca in August.
• In the Four-Year-Old Championship, it was FR’s Citadel who claimed the highest qualifying score in Ocala in August with an 88.1.
• Jennifer Brannigan not only has two entries in the CCI5*-L, but she also has one entry in the Four-Year-Old Championship, Sharon Baker's Irish Sport Horse gelding Cool MacCallan (Coolkearan x Sisceal), and one entry Five-Year-Old Championships, Big I Ranch Enterprises' Irish Sport Horse gelding Cavalier’s Romeo (Last Gunfighter x Tickle Me).

• Mike Pendleton has the most rides on horses entered in this year’s Dutta Corp. USEA YEH East Coast Championships with two horses in the Five-Year-Old Championships, A-Debussy Royale and Kara Angulo’s Holsteiner gelding Adorrado (Adagio de Talm x Chiava), bred by Gripp Torsten, and three horses in the Four-Year-Old Championships: Ann Wilson’s Holsteiner gelding King Siegfried (Casanova de la Ponne x Helma) who was bred by Hans-Joachim Nitschke, Kelli Temple’s Westphalian gelding Clive Christian (Dembele x Olivia) who was bred by Jan Lohman, and Lisa Samoylenko’s Irish Sport Horse mare Rahale Comet (Island Commander x Whats Another One) bred by Michael Reck Jr.
• The Irish Sport Horse is by far the most popular breed in this year’s championships, with 20 entries in the Five-Year-Old division and 16 in the Four-Year-Old division.

The Facts:

• The Dutta Corp. USEA YEH East and West Coast Championships will be judged by Marilyn Payne (USA) and Martin Plewa (GER). Additionally, the East Coast Championships will bring on four judges for the 4-year-old Championship: Debbie Rodriguez (dressage), Anne Moss (conformation), Karen Winn (jumping/gallop), and Phyllis Dawson (jumping/gallop).
  
• Horse and rider pairs had to score a 75% or greater to qualify for the Dutta Corp. USEA YEH East Coast Championships.
• Horses in the 4-year-old and 5-year-old Championships will perform three sections: Conformation and Type (10%), Dressage Test (20%), and a Jumping/Galloping Test (70%) which consists of a hybrid show jumping and cross-country test.
• YEH and FEH competitors are only allowed to compete their 4-year-old in either the FEH 4-year-old Championship or the YEH 4-year-old Championship, not both.
• The Holekamp/Turner Young Event Horse Le Lion d'Angers Grant and The Dutta Corp. prize (round trip flight) will be up for grabs for the highest-scoring horse from the YEH 5-year-old Championships (both East and West) that is qualified and willing to compete at the FEI World Breeding Eventing Championships in Le Lion d'Angers, France, in their 7-year-old year.

Thursday, October 13th

• 8:00 a.m. - YEH 4-year-old Championship dressage and conformation
• 8:00 a.m. - YEH 5-year-old Championship dressage and conformation
• 10:00 a.m. - YEH 4-year-old Championship jumping and galloping

Friday, October 14th

• 8:00 a.m. - YEH 5-year-old Championship jumping and galloping

About the USEA Young Event Horse Program

The Young Event Horse (YEH) Program was first established in 2004 as an eventing talent search. Much like similar programs in Europe, the YEH program was designed to identify young horses aged four and five, that possess the talent and disposition to, with proper training, excel at the uppermost levels of the sport. The ultimate goal of the program is to distinguish horses with the potential to compete at the four- and five-star levels, but many fine horses that excel at the lower levels are also showcased by the program.

The YEH program provides an opportunity for breeders and owners to exhibit the potential of their young horses while encouraging the breeding and development of top event horses for the future. The program rewards horses who are educated and prepared in a correct and progressive manner. At qualifying events, youngsters complete a dressage test and a jumping/galloping/general impression phase. At Championships, young horses are also evaluated on their conformation in addition to the dressage test and jumping/galloping/general impression phase.
