The USEA Young Event Horse Series is in motion at various event venues across the country this summer. Consisting of three phases different from those of traditional events, the YEH Series is meant to discover young horses with a bright future in eventing.

The YEH Series kicked off the event season on February 8 at the Longwood Farm YEH in Ocala, Florida. Rider Matt Flynn and A. Patrick Flynn’s Irish Sport Horse Gelding Dr. Drumiller won the four-year-old division with a score of 83.45, while M. Flynn’s Oldenburg Gelding, Fernhill Deadly, took the five-year-old division with a score of 81.27. Flynn and Dr. Drumiller stole the spotlight once again at the Ark YEH in Monroe, NC on April 1, where they won the four-year-old division with a score of 79.91.

Judith McSwain’s five-year-old Holsteiner Gelding, Fleeceworks Cinco, is also a youngster with a promising future. Ridden by Tamra Smith, Cinco has continued his success as last year’s West Coast four-year-old champion by placing first at the Twin Rivers YEH on April 19, setting the highest score to date for the YEH Series with a 92.43. Cinco and Smith showed another great performance at the May 11 Galway Downs YEH in Temecula, CA, where they won their division with a 90.92.

The latest YEH events were Greystone Farm YEH in Brookebille, Maryland and The Event Derby at Cottonwood Ranch. Both YEH shows took place on June 16, but final results are pending.

These YEH events are only five of the twelve that occurred this spring. There were many impressive performances at all of the events, and there are many more talented young horses to come. Go to http://useventing.com/resource/results-2012-usea-yeh to view the complete list of YEH results.

Coming soon in the YEH series is the South Farm HT on June 29, the Event at Rebecca Farm on July 11, and the Coconino Classic Event & H.T. on July 12. The West Coast will wrap up the 2012 YEH Series with the USEA West Coast Young Event Horse Championships on September 20. This championship will be hosted by Twin Rivers Ranch in Paso Robles, California. The East Coast will finish up the YEH Series with the East Coast Young Event Horse Championships on October 18. The East Coast Championships will be hosted by Fair Hill Horse Park in Elkton, Maryland.

The newest part of the YEH Series, the New Event Horse (NEH) division is also a great option for horses who are inexperienced with competition and over the age of five. Samantha Taylor and her seven year old thoroughbred gelding, Nick of Time, competed in The Ark YEH in the NEH division on April 1. Taylor and Nick of Time were the only pair entered in the division, but still ended the day successfully with a score of 65.85.
