Interesting Person of the Day - Liz Halliday

Dual sportswoman Liz Halliday has laid out her plans for her return to three-day eventing at the start of this season.

The UK-based Californian, who combines her equestrian activities with her role as a professional racing driver, missed the second half of the 2007 season recovering from a badly broken collar bone sustained in an event at Brightling Park in July. However, now that she has made a full recovery and has had a successful winter, Halliday will resume active competition with a trip to Barroca D’Alva in Portugal to start the season.

Her horses Fox and Oscar will compete in the CIC** and CIC* classes in the international Portuguese events’ opening week on 27 February – 2 March and will stay on for the CCI** event on 5-9 March. Her early season calendar also includes a CCI** event with Oscar at Compeigne, France, in April, while she also plans to compete with Oscar and Fox at advanced level and CIC & CCI*** events later in the year. Her new horse Donovan will compete primarily at novice level this year with hopes of competing in his first CCI* in July.

Halliday admitted she was looking forward to resuming competition and ready to tackle the goals she has laid out for 2008. “It’ll be great to be back. I’m fully focused on the new season and I am putting last year’s injury behind me. It was one of those freak accidents that can happen sometimes in this sport and it’s important to just forget it and get back in the saddle competing.”

“The aim for this year is to compete Fox and Oscar at Advanced and then CIC & CCI*** level. After his 2 CCI** runs, I am hoping that Oscar will do his first Advanced in May, which will be very exciting, and then we can keep moving forward from there! I’ll also be working hard with my new horse Donovan. He’ll be competing at Novice level events across the UK and then I’m hoping to give him his first CCI* outing in Ede, Holland, this summer.”

Nailing No-Stirrup November with Ride iQ

Every now and then, a video goes viral on social media of a rider heroically going around a show jumping or cross-country course with one, or no, stirrups. There’s a great one of Mark Todd going around Badminton with a broken stirrup, and you just wonder how on earth a course that difficult could be jumped like that—because it’s hard enough with two stirrups!
