Eventers are generally quite good at creating a welcoming community for people of all backgrounds and abilities, whether they’re brand new to the sport or competing at the five-star level. It’s not uncommon to see an upper-level rider taking their time to say an encouraging word or extending a hand to a new competitor.
The U.S. Eventing Association caters to a wide variety of stakeholders, from young riders, amateurs, and professionals, to organizers, volunteers, and coaches. The 21-member USEA Board of Governors meets routinely to discuss rule changes, budgets, safety, competitions, and more, in hopes of moving the sport forward and helping members and the programs USEA supports.

The Bert Wood Novice Stakes at the Woodside Summer Horse Trials brought out what the Novice level of eventing is all about—showcasing promising new horses in the sport, providing young riders with an opportunity to gain foundational experience, and celebrating the adult amateur riders that are an integral part of hosting successful events.

I’d like to preface my story by saying that I have been a 30-year hunter/jumper rider and trainer. I run a large training and lesson farm in Monroe, Georgia, and up until April of 2024, I would have considered myself a hunter/jumper through and through, and let me just say my world has been flipped upside down in the best way possible!
American rider Jenny Caras is holding her own on British soil. On July 24, she and Sommersby, who she owns with Jerry Hollis, won the Hambro Sport Horses CCI3*-S at Burgham Horse Trials in Northumberland, England. The pair finished on their dressage score of 28.2, their best finishing score yet. It hasn’t always been easy for this pair, but Caras feels as though Sommersby really stepped up to the plate.
