United States Eventing Association

The United States Eventing Association’s (USEA) Area V of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas kicked off its 2023 season of USEA-recognized horse trials with the Texas Rose Horse Park H.T. in Tyler, Texas, on March 24-26. Several area riders returned home after spending the winter in other eventing hubs. These riders are making an impact on the national stage and showcasing the dedication Area V has to the sport of eventing, as well as the camaraderie among its riders.

West Coast eventers experienced tremendous success in 2022. Tamie Smith recorded top-10 finishes at Badminton in England, at the FEI World Championships at Pratoni in Italy, and at the Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill. Helen Alliston won the $60,000 Adequan USEA Advanced Final, and Tommy Greengard captured the USEA Intermediate Championship at the USEA American Eventing Championships (AEC), presented by Nutrena Feeds. James Alliston returned to the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event for the first time since 2017 and finished third in the CCI4*-S.

The United States Eventing Association’s (USEA) Area III has become a hotspot for eventing. It’s quite literally a hotspot because the warm weather attracts riders and horses from around the country during the winter with more events scheduled in 2023 than any other area in the country.

The United States Eventing Association’s Area X of Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico will kick off its 2023 calendar of USEA-recognized horse trials in March with the vision of growing the SAzEA Horse Trials and returning the Coconino Horse Trials to their profile as a destination event following the effects of COVID-19 and then wildfires in the area.

Area VI has produced its fair share of Olympians, such as, Jil Walton (1992 Barcelona), Gina Miles (2008 Beijing), Tamie Smith (2021 Tokyo), and Lauren Billys (2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2021 Tokyo representing Puerto Rico). This month’s feature is USEA Area III which is made up of Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. Area III is home to many local and USEA celebrities such as the current USEA President Max Corcoran! Doug Payne’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic mount Vandiver was also bred and born in Area III in the state of Alabama.

This month’s feature is USEA Area II which is made up of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and North Carolina. Area II is the home of the USEA Headquarters, located in Leesburg, Virginia and just across the street from Morven Park. In 2021, 1,762 USEA members called Area II their home - making it the USEA area with the most members. Learn more about Area II below.

To honor the lives of Devyn Merritt Anderson and Jessica Halliday who both lost their courageous battles with cancer in late 2021 Area I has established an annual “Living Courageously” Sportsmanship Award. Both Anderson and Halliday were active Adult Rider Program (ARP) members in Area I. They continued to support their riding friends and family no matter what life threw at them and could often be found cheering others on with a smile.

This month’s feature is USEA Area I which is comprised of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Founded in the 1960s, Area I was the birthplace of the United States Combined Training Association (USCTA) which was founded in 1959 and would later evolve into the USEA in 2001. In 2021 just under 800 members made up the membership count in Area I.
