Meet the USEA Areas: Area II

Get to know each United States Eventing Association (USEA) Area a little better in this new series, Meet the Areas! This month’s feature is USEA Area II which is made up of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and North Carolina. Area II is the home of the USEA Headquarters, located in Leesburg, Virginia and just across the street from Morven Park. In 2021, 1,762 USEA members called Area II their home - making it the USEA area with the most members. Learn more about Area II below.

Area II Fun Facts

The passion for volunteering runs strong! Area II members made up a group of individuals who approached the USEA Board of Governors in 2015 with the request of the formation of the Volunteer Committee. Area II was later the birthplace of the Eventingvolunteers.com program which was first tested at the Maryland Horse Trials, Seneca Valley Pony Club Horse Trials, and the Waredaca Horse Trials before being rolled out nationwide five years ago. In 2021, Area II members clocked 23,236 hours of volunteer time donated across 52 events!

In 2018, Area II instituted the Service to Eventing Awards to award to individuals who demonstrate a very high standard of service to the area. New leaders are acknowledged every even-numbered year and past recipients include Mary Coldren, Susan and Duncan MacRae, Brian O’Connor, Steve Symansky, and Melissa Stubenberg.

Every year, Area II holds a fundraising auction of donated event entries and other goods and services donated by many area professionals and businesses. The funds raised go toward Area II’s very active Young Riders program or are split between any of the other programs that Area II administers. In addition to event entries, the fundraiser has auctioned off lessons from Mike Plumb, Bruce Davidson, Stephen Bradley, as well as the opportunity to ride former USET and five-star rider Jane Sleeper’s five-star mount, UN - making dreams come true for a couple of very excited riders!
