Get to know each United States Eventing Association (USEA) Area a little better in this new series, Meet the Areas! This month’s feature is USEA Area VI which is made up of California and Hawaii. Area VI has produced its fair share of Olympians, such as, Jil Walton (1992 Barcelona), Gina Miles (2008 Beijing), Tamie Smith (2021 Tokyo), and Lauren Billys (2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2021 Tokyo representing Puerto Rico). Learn more about Area VI below.

Area VI Fun Facts

In the early 1930’s, Eventing started taking hold at Hope Ranch Saddle Club in Santa Barbara, California. This marked a huge turning point for the sport. Competitions beginning at Hope Ranch inspired other events to take root in places such as La Jolla, Pacific Palisades, Rancho Santa Fe, and Flintridge. From there, eventing’s popularity on the west coast grew to where it is today!

If you ever go to the intersection of Wilshire Blvd and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, you’ll be standing on what was once the finish line for the 1932 Olympic Games cross-country! The 1932 Games brought quite a good amount of attention to eventing in California, sparking increased interest in the sport over the next couple of decades.

You may know Pebble Beach for its beautiful ocean views or luxury golf courses, but did you know that in 1959, it was one of the first to host FEI competitions in California? A multitude of highly influential people got their start at Pebble Beach; Pete, Mick, and Julie Costello, Malcolm Hook, Steve Hales, Derek DiGrazia, and Ernie and Lyn Simard just to name a few. This event was one of the only ones, at the time, to always have roads and tracks before cross-country as well as both hunter and horse trials.

An Introduction to the USEA's Godshall Accessibility Report

The Godshall Accessibility Report, created by the United States Eventing Association’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, aims to honor Christopher Godshall’s legacy by addressing accessibility challenges within the sport of eventing. Inspired by Godshall’s own struggles with mobility due to Myasthenia Gravis, the report underscores the importance of creating inclusive environments for riders, spectators, volunteers, and others involved in the sport.
