Twelve-year-old Izzy Lenk has been riding since she was just 1 year old. At 2 years old, her mother signed her up for her very first riding lessons. “I’ve loved horses all my life,” Lenk explained. “We came across Waredaca when I was 5 years old, and that’s when my love for eventing began.”

Waredaca Farm in Laytonsville, Maryland (Area II) hosts three horse trials each year: one in May, one in August, and one in October. In May and August, Waredaca offers Beginner Novice through Intermediate horse trials and Future Event Horse (FEH) and Young Event Horse (YEH) classes. In October they host Beginner Novice through Preliminary horse trials and USEA Classic Series Novice, Training, and Preliminary Three-Day Events.
Waredaca first began offering a Classic Series Three-Day competition in 2004 and is one of the longest running Classic Series Three-Day Events on the calendar. The Hylofit USEA Classic Series Three-Day allows horses and riders to experience the thrill of roads and tracks, steeplechase, and cross-country like the endurance days of old.
Over the past 40 years, Waredaca has expanded its USEA events from one a year with two levels to three events annually offering Beginner Novice through Intermediate levels as well as a Classic Three-day Event at the Novice through Preliminary levels.
With dark skies and dropping temperatures on October 25-28, the weekend of the Hylofit USEA Classic Three-Day Event at Waredaca brought a mix of weather elements for competitors. Amidst the cold spitting rain in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Alice Roosevelt, Caitlin O’Roark, and Cami Pease didn’t let the weather dampen their spirits as they all took home bright blue ribbons.
In the days when long format eventing reigned, there was a different kind of emphasis on preparation, on endurance, on horsemanship. The nature of the competition demanded it.
It’s been 13 years since the switch to the short format for the Athens Olympics—yet the long format remains a hot topic. Why do you think the eventing community has kept the conversation alive despite the slim chance of its return?
