Eventing Ready for Take-Aff As Austria Draw First in FEI World Eventing Championships at Aachen
Aachen, Germany.—Aug. 12—Eventing athletes stepped into the spotlight at Aachen today as the first horse inspection brought the international field together, signaling the opening of the competition at the FEI Eventing World Championship 2026.
A total of 88 horses representing 27 nations were presented to the Ground Jury ahead of four days of action that will decide the team and individual titles. Sixteen nations will field teams, with the remaining combinations vying for individual honors.
With an enthusiastic crowd applauding from the stands, there was no mistaking the occasion as all horses were accepted and declared fit to tackle the three phases.
Once the inspection was complete, attention turned to the draw order and declaration of starters. Of the 16 nations fielding teams, Austria was drawn first, with Daniel Dunst and Chevalier 97 given the honor of being the first combination down the center line when competition gets underway tomorrow.
The first U.S. horse and rider pair to compete will be Phillip Dutton riding Ann Jones, Ann Lapidses, Caroline Moran, and Neill Sites's 11-year-old Holstenier gelding Denim (Dinken x Celia II). They are fourth in the order of go. Caroline Pamukcu will be 25th in the order with HSH Blake, a 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding (Tolan R x Doughiska Lass) whom Pamukcu co-owns with husband Deniz Pamucku, Mollie Hoff, and Sherrie Martin. The remaining U.S. pairs will execute their dressage tests on Friday.
Home Hopes
For Germany, the defense of their World title comes with the added weight, and opportunity, of home advantage. Four years after taking gold at Pratoni del Vivaro (ITA), the hosts will begin their bid to retain the crown in front of an Aachen crowd eager to see another German triumph on the Soers.
Libussa Lübbeke and Caramia FRH will be first into the arena for Germany tomorrow, followed by Malin Hansen-Hotopp and Carlitos Quidditch K. On Friday, Julia Krajewski and Uelzener’s Nickel will be joined by Michael Jung and fischerChipmunk FRH, who will anchor the German team order.
Friday could also deliver one of the most compelling showdowns of the Championship. Laura Collett (GBR) aboard London 52 and Jung (GER) with fischerChipmunk FRH, two combinations who have repeatedly battled for some of the sport’s biggest honors, are both set to ride that day. London 52 and fischerChipmunk FRH have long been spoken of among the very best horses in eventing history, making their latest head-to-head one of the most eagerly awaited of the opening phase.
Twenty Years On
There is an added sense of history surrounding this Championship, with eventing returning 20 years after Aachen last staged the global title contest in 2006.
That year, Germany celebrated team gold in front of a home crowd, while Great Britain claimed the individual crown through Zara Tindall (then Phillips) and Toytown. Two decades later, both nations return to the same ground among a formidable international contingent, with a new generation ready to challenge for the honours.
Few sports showcase longevity quite like eventing. Twenty years after competing in Aachen in 2006, seven athletes from that Championship are back again and still performing at the highest level.
Andrew Hoy (AUS), Karin Donckers (BEL), Peter Flarup (DEN), Nicolas Touzaint (FRA), Phillip Dutton (USA), Harald Ambros (AUT), and Carlos Parro (BRA) all return this week, underlining just how enduring careers at the top of the sport can be.
The horses have changed and 20 years have passed, but the ambition remains the same. Aachen is now ready to discover whether any part of 2006 will be repeated, or whether an entirely new chapter will be written.
First test
All eyes will now turn to the dressage arena, where every mark earned between the white boards will matter.
In the past eight FEI Eventing World Championships, the eventual winning team has been placed either first or second after dressage, adding extra significance to every movement over the next two days as the first real advantage of the Championship is established.
The dressage phase of the eventing competition at the FEI World Championships Aachen 2026 begins at 09:30 (CEST) on Thursday and will culminate on Friday.
