Alternative Bit Check Procedures For California Competitions

By USEA | January 26, 2012

The USEF Dressage Department has re-authorized the use of alternative saddlery inspection procedures (as noted in USEF DR126) for Dressage shows in California due to recent EHV-1 outbreaks.

The USEF Dressage Department recommends that ring stewards conduct a visual check of the horses, with no touching of the horse or any equipment.

Please note horses from the affected state that travel to other states for competition should also be included in this category of visual inspections described above.

The USEF has not issued this same procedure for Eventing, however, if the organizing committees or individual riders in EHV-1 outbreak areas wish to follow this bit check procedure they may. Riders should bring a halter to warm-up with them and remove their horse's bridle in the presence of the steward to allow for a visual check of the bit.
