RIP Reno Tune

By Alex Jones | April 15, 2011

Reno Tune was humanely euthanized due to complications to EPM on April 13, 2011; the liver chestnut gelding was 17.

Reno Tune competed with his old owner Amy Smith through the Advanced level from 2002 to 2004. They competed out of Phillip Dutton’s True Prospect Farm in Pennsylvania. In 2003, Amy and Shorty completed both the Fox Hall CCI3* and the Fair Hill CCI3*, and at Fair Hill, they were one of the few double clean cross-country around the CCI3* course. They were set to compete at Rolex CCI4* in 2004, however Shorty, sustained a minor injury and did not compete. After sitting in a field for three years Amy decided that Shorty needed to compete again, and he was sold to Young Rider, Alex Jones.

Shortly after purchasing, Alex and Shorty went back to Phillip’s barn and rode at his summer camp that he has every summer. They then competed at Maui Jim in 2008 at the Training Level. Shorty was purchased so Alex could compete at Young Riders again, after her other mount was injured. However, that would never happen. In August of 2008 Shorty was diagnosed with EPM.

After fighting for 3 years with the EPM, Shorty took a turn for the worst and it was deemed in the horses’ best interest that he be euthanized.

“I knew it was time, when his normal happy go lucky way was no longer there,” said Alex. “He was truly one in a million. I am grateful for the time that I got to ride and compete him.”

The horse was buried in a beautiful corner surrounded by trees at the back of Alex’s grandparent’s 500-acre ranch in Mounds, OK.
