Cross-country day at Richland Park saw 240 riders galloping through sun soaked fields, picturesque woods, and over pristine fences. The Adequan USEA Gold Cup Division was the highlight of the day, and there were very few problems on course. Nate Chambers and Rolling Stone II maintained their overnight lead by scorching the cross-country course and adding no penalties to their dressage score of 45.9.

“Rolly was great – he went out taking me right to the fences,” Nate said. “It was a lot of fun, as soon as I crossed the finish line I wished I could turn around and do it again it was so much fun. I had a blast all the way around, the course flowed nicely, the footing was good, it’s a beautiful day, and the whole experience was just all around enjoyable.”

Rolly came out of the vet box in less than 15 minutes, and Nate thinks that he came out great and should be sound and ready for tomorrow’s show jump round. Nate has been working recently with both Joe Fargis and David O’Connor to improve his show jump riding, so he hopes to be able to leave all the rails in their cups and keep his lead.

The second place position is held by Boyd Martin and Densey Juvenon’s Remington XXV. The pair, who are on the short list for the American team for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, came in right on the optimum time of 6:40.

“Remi had a good cross-country round, pulled up well, jumped well, and galloped well, so it seems that this weekend has been a success for both he and Neville,” Boyd explained. “I thought both my horses jumped really well through the second water, so that was a lot of fun. I had a fall on the bounce last year with another horse, so I am glad that I was able to put that behind me.”

Boyd says his strategy for tomorrow’s show jump is simple: “I am going to try and leave all the rails up.” Katie Prudent is flying in to coach the short listed horses, so Boyd will have the opportunity to warm both Remi and Neville up with her.

Selena O’Hanlon, a member of the Canadian Short List, was able to claim the third place position for herself with a double clear round with Elaine Davies’ Colombo.

“I thought that it was a really classic cross-country with a lot to do so it was a lot of fun,” said Selena. “It had everything you are ever going to run into on a major cross-country course, double waters, a sunken road, big coffin, skinnies, corners and the course rode really, really well. I was going for the time because our coach [David O’Connor] asked us to go out there and test the horses at Richland so if we need to we can back them off at the AEC before WEG. I was really pleased with Colombo’s recovery, and we definitely lucked out with the weather.”

In the CIC2*, Sinead Halpin and Manoir de Carneville maintained their lead with a 49.4. Phillip Dutton and Why Not added 2.4 time penalties, but was still able to hold on to second place. Kristen Rozycki and Full Circle moved up three spots with a double clear round to take third.

No changes in the top three occurred in Advanced A with Allison Springer aboard Arthur and Phillip Dutton with The Foreman and Woodburn holding on to their overnight spots. In division B, Kim Severson aboard Tipperary Liadhnan and Becky Holder with Courageous Comet both put in double clear rounds to stay tied for first. Kim came in only one second away from the optimum time while Becky was 16 seconds off, so if they both jump clear tomorrow Kim will be able to claim the win as her own. Canadian, Stephanie Rhodes-Bosch and Port Authority moved up from fifth to third with a clean ride.

The FEI divisions jog at 7:30 AM Sunday. Show jumping also begins at 7:30 with the Preliminary divisions followed by the CIC3*, Advanced, CIC2*, and Intermediate divisions.

The Adequan USEA Gold Cup Series is made possible through the support of its many sponsors: Title: Adequan; Legacy: Nunn Finer and Nutrena, and Patron: Broadstone Equine Insurance Agency, Mountain Horse, and Succeed.
