With a natural break in competitions coming up throughout many USEA Areas, autumn clinic season is heating up. Whether you’re riding with a local legend or a visiting Olympian, a bit of preparation can help you make the most of your experience. The team at STRIDER has some tips to help you and your horse optimize your next clinic opportunity.

Do Your Homework

Before clinic day, take some time to research the clinicians background and teaching style. See if videos are available, search for some interviews, or ask fellow riders about their experience. Having an understanding of their teaching priorities and the clinic structure will help you make the most of the session.

Be sure to also scope out the facility ahead of time, know where to park and what the expectation is for your clinic session. Should you be on and warmed up? Or does the clinician like to see your warm up process during the session?

Treat it like a Horse Show

Ensure your horse is fit enough to do the job you’ll be asking at the clinic and double check that your tack is well-fitted and in good condition. Nobody wants to deal with a broken rein or stirrup leather in the middle of a lesson. Plus, tidy turnout counts! A polished presentation denotes respect for the clinician’s time, so polish those boots and spend some time cleaning your tack.

Have an Open Mind

Clinics are for progress, not perfection. The clinician is there to help you, so you can expect to be challenged or presented with a new idea. Take good notes, ask good questions, and remember that growth begins at the end of your comfort zone.
