Fence-By-Fence: The 2026 Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event Cross-Country Course Preview

Derek di Grazia been the cross-country course designer at the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event since 2011, and this year, as always, he's put together a masterful track for the feature CCI5*-L division. In addition, di Grazia has designed the Cosequin Lexington CCI4*-S track since the division was introduced in 2021.
You can get a first look at these amazing courses as well as some insider interviews with di Grazia himself thanks to our friends at the CrossCountry App!
The courses this year have been refreshed at key complexes like Pete's Hollow and the Head of the Lake, but you'll still see some of your favorites like the Corgi and Dachshund jumps.
The five-star course has an optimum time of 11 minutes and 5 seconds across di Grazia's 6,312-meter track which will require riders to be galloping along at a pace of 570 mpm to make the time. Horse and rider pairs will have to tackle 49 efforts set up across the 28 obstacle course.
Meanwhile, in the CCI4*-S, competitors will tackle 37 efforts across di Grazia's 23 obstacle course, aiming to meet an optimum time of 6 minutes and 37 seconds. The track spans across 3,770 meters and will require these pairs to travel at a pace of 570 mpm to make the time.
