Fast Facts: 2026 Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event

By Meagan DeLisle - USEA Staff | April 21, 2026

Every spring, the Kentucky Horse Park becomes the center of the eventing world. The Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event, one of just a handful of CCI5*-L competitions globally, draws the sport’s top horse-and-rider combinations to test their skill, partnership, and grit at the highest level.

With another exciting year on deck, the 2026 edition brings a fresh set of stats that capture the scope of the event—from the depth of the field to the scale of competition and everything in between. Get to know a little bit more about this year's field, officials, schedule, and more in this edition of Fast Facts.

The CCI5*-L Field:

  • The CCI5*-L field features 30 horse-and-rider combinations representing five nations: the United States, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.
  • The field is heavily U.S.-led, with 16 American riders competing, making up over half of the entries.
  • The most common horse ages in the field are 11 and 12, with six horses each.
  • In terms of breeding, Irish Sport Horses are the most represented breed (8 total).
  • Thoroughbred influence remains evident, with four pure Thoroughbreds and one Thoroughbred cross represented in the field.
  • In addition to the four five-star first time pairs competing these weekend, there are five horses who are making their five-star debut: Possante, Diabolo, Pomp N Circumstance, and Chiraz.
  • Several riders will pilot multiple entries, including Boyd Martin (3 horses) and Caroline Pamukcu (3 horses), while Harry Meade and Tim Price will each compete with two horses.
  • This year's field includes two previous Kentucky CCI5*-L podium finishers, both ridden by Boyd Martin: Miks Master C (3rd in 2023 with Liz Halliday) and Commando 3 (2nd in 2025).
  • The field also spans a wide range of experience, with rider ages ranging from 23 to 62.
  • There are two 19-year-old veteran horses in the field, Sunday Times (Arden Wildasin) and Corvett (Emily Hamel). Hamel chose the Kentucky Three-Day Event as "Barry's" step-down event since this was the place he debuted at the level. Barry will retire from the five-star level having completed every five-star in the world aside from the five-star at Adelaide (Australia).
  • Many horses in the field boast serious accolades on their resume:
    • Team Representation
      • HSH Blake represented the U.S. at the 2023 Pan American Games where he won individual gold and at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
      • Vitali is also an Olympic veteran, having competed at Tokyo in 2021. He has two top-three finishes at the five-star level under his belt as well: a third at Burghley in 2022 and a second at Burghley in 2024.
      • Artist competed at the 2022 World Championships and finished third at Adelaide that same year. Last year he finished second at the Maryland 5 Star.
      • Pomp N Circumstance rode for team Ireland at the 2025 European Championships.
      • Cooley Nutcracker was a member of the 2024 Paris Olympics team with his former rider Halliday. Since Halliday's accident, Martin has taken over the reins, and the pair finished third at Pau (France) last year.
  • Notable Five-Star Finishes
    • Brookfield Quality was third at Pau in 2024.
    • Grafennacht was second at Maryland in 2023 with William Fox-Pitt.
    • Commando 3 was second here at Kentucky last year and third at the Maryland 5 Star in the same year.
    • Plot Twist B had a second place finish at Pau last season.
    • Humble Glory finished in third at Adelaide in 2023.
    • Galileo Nieuwmoed finished in second in 2023 at Burghley and third at Maryland in 2024
