Event Horse and Equine Medical Technician Killed in Hyperbaric Chamber Accident

By USEA

Sue Clark, the stable manager at Stonehall Farm in The Plains, VA, has confirmed the death of Landmark’s Legendary Affaire, a 6-year-old Thoroughbred gelding owned by Ms. Jacqueline Mars and ridden by Lauren Kieffer.

“Tux” was inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber at KESMARC Florida, an equine sports medicine facility in Ocala, Florida, when the chamber exploded. Local reports say 28-year-old Erica Marshall was also killed in the accident. Sorcha Moneley was reportedly critically injured and airlifted to a health facility in Gainesville, Florida for treatment.

According to Sue, Tux was receiving a general wellness treatment in preparation for the upcoming competition season. Sue said they are not sure about the details of the accident; there are mixed stories about the incident at this time.

“Ms. Mars and the farm feel this is a tremendous tragedy for the farm and the families of the girl that died and the one that was injured,” Sue said. “We are in shock. It is always sad to lose a horse, but it is doubly tragic when a human life is involved.”

The USEA extends its deepest condolences to all those involved in this tragedy.

One of my favorite sayings is, “You don’t win ribbons at horse shows, you only pick them up there.” The idea behind this message is that our ability to succeed is really created in our schooling sessions where we learn and practice the many skills required to ride successfully.
