We couldn’t have asked for better weather at the April Chattahoochee Horse Trials this weekend. Carl Bouckaert’s 8,000 acre farm provided a stunning backdrop and pristine accommodations. A devastating flood in 2009 destroyed 30 cross-country jumps and forced Bouckaert and his team to cancel an event. Cross-country has since doubled in the number of jumps, and permanent competition stabling with 120 comfortable stalls has been completed with more on the way. Construction continues in preparation for the Area III Championships and the 2010 American Eventing Championships. Carl is a master multi-tasker as he rode in three divisions this weekend. On Sunday, he won Open Preliminary on Cyrano and enjoyed presenting awards and posing for photos with competitors.

Everyone was very pleased and excited to see Jacob Two Two in the awards ceremony of the Training Rider division with Leslie Wylie. Standing at the side of the arena, I heard Mr. Bouckaert exclaim his excitement that this memorable Olympian was "still around" while he positioned the horse and posed for a very special photo. Leslie had a huge grin on her face. It was a very heartwarming moment.

For some, riding is a casual hobby, taken up in childhood and lasting a few years before fading as the demands of “real life” take over. For others, it’s an all-consuming way of life, worth all the tremendous expense and pressure. Eventer Maddy Temkin is wholeheartedly in the second category.
