Young Event Horses to Chase Championship Title in Coming Weeks

Leesburg, Va. - The United States Eventing Association (USEA) is making final preparations for the 2014 Young Event Horse (YEH) Championships, which will be held in two locations this month: one on the east coast, and one on the west coast.
The East Coast YEH Championship will take place at the Fair Hill International Horse Trials in Elkton, Md., on October 16-17, and will offer an abundance of trophies, ribbons, tack and prizes. The West Coast YEH Championship will follow two weeks later at Galway Downs International in Temecula, Calif., October 29-30. To qualify for the Championships, competitors had to earn scores of 70 percent or higher at two YEH qualifiers, or a score of 75 percent or higher at one qualifier.
The nation’s top four- and five-year-old young event horses will vie for the Championship title, as well as the chance to win the Holekamp/Turner Young Event Horse Lion d’Angers Prize and Grant. This will be awarded to the highest scoring five-year-old young event horse combined from the east and west coast Championships. The grant aims to financially enable the winning horse to travel to the FEI World Young Horse Championships at Le Lion d’Angers in France for the 7-year-old two-star Championship.
The winner of the grant, if bred in North America, will be awarded $17,500 to travel to Le Lion d’Angers. If the winner is an imported horse, the grant will total $8,000. If the highest scoring 5-year-old does not qualify or is unable to attend the Le Lion d’Angers during their 7-year-old year, then the money will be awarded to the next highest scorer who is qualified, able, and willing to go to France.
The impressive line-up of judges for this year’s YEH Championships on both coasts consists of internationally renowned breeder, horseman and coach, William Micklem; world-class rider and judge Bea di Grazia; and highly-respected sporthorse breed inspector and USEF dressage and eventing judge, Cathy Tucker-Slaterbeck.

The USEA sends a special thanks to Timothy Holekamp of New Spring Farm and Christine Turner of Indian Creek Farm for generating the Holekamp/Turner YEH Lion d’Angers Grant and raising funds to support it. The USEA would also like to thank its YEH sponsors: Standlee Premium Western Forage, Fleeceworks, and WeatherBeeta.
