Lexington, Ky.—April 27— In comparison to its little sister, the Cosequin CCI4*-S, the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI5*-L was much calmer in terms of shock factor today. There were four pairs who retired on cross-country, two riders who parted ways with their horses, and five pairs finished with jump penalties added to their score. Overall, no one jump or combination seemed to be the trickster on Derek di Grazia's five-star course with the few issues that were had spread across the board.
Only two riders were able to make the optimum time of 11 minutes and 15 seconds: Christoph Wahler (GER) riding D'Accord FRH and the United States' very own Mia Farley riding Phelps. Farley and Phelps were also the only pair to make the time at the 2023 MARS Maryland 5 Star, so they are creating quite the trend for themselves.
We've detailed the full play-by-play of what happened where below.
#2 Our pathfinders, Sara Kozumplik and Rock Phantom, just never quite got into gear from the start box and had an early stop at 5A at the Mars Sustainability Bay. Knowing her horse, Sara raised her hand and opted to save her horse for another day.
#6 Susannah Berry almost parted ways with Clever Trick on the drop in at the Head of the Lake. She caught herself and got back up in the tack after a near-miss with the spectator section on the other side of the lake before making her way back around the track with 20 penalties added to her score.
#11 Ariel Grald and Leamore Master Plan found the corner at C at the Head of the Lake just at the wrong stride to pick up 20 points. They circled back around, finished out with the option, and kept on their way. They were also given an additional 11 penalties for activating a frangible on course.
#12 Calvin Bockmann and The Phantom of the Opera were cruising around the whole course on a nice forward stride, but that eventually caught up to them at the drop at 15 as the horse came to a hard stop. Calvin got him going forward again and got him down and back on track.
#17 Kirsty Chabert and Classic VI had a sticky moment over the B element at the Head of the Lake but rerouted quickly to the option and did not acquire any penalties there. They did, however, pick up 20 at the C element of Pete’s Hollow when the mare just couldn’t lock onto that corner on the stride she was on.
#21 Bobby Meyerhoff and Lumumba ran into early issues on the course at the A at Mars Sustainability Bay and ultimately retired.
#22 Lisa Marie Fergusson made it all the way around to the Park Question at 23 and unfortunately parted ways with Honor Me just four from home.
#23 In probably the biggest heartbreak of the day, Philip Dutton and Quasi Cool both went down upon landing from the very last fence of the course. Both Phillip and "Quasi" got up and walked away, but the veterinary team did pop by to make sure Quasi was still in good form.
#34 Andrew McConnon and Ferrie’s Cello just didn’t have quite the pace necessary to make the corner, element C, at Pete’s Hollow come up just right. They picked up 20 and continued on.
#45 Doug Payne made the decision to retire Camarillo at fence 21.
#46 After On Cue activated a frangible at 10AB, Boyd Martin opted to pull her up and call it a day sometime between then and fence 11.
