Job Summary

The United States Eventing Association (USEA) is seeking a forward-thinking and service-oriented Finance Manager / Controller to lead the organization’s financial operations, administrative infrastructure, and systems modernization. This full-time, exempt position plays a key leadership role in ensuring the fiscal health, compliance, and operational efficiency of the Association and the USEA Foundation.

This role combines strategic oversight with hands-on responsibility, requiring a candidate who is equally comfortable leading high-level financial planning and engaging with members, Area Treasurers, auditors, and internal staff.

Candidates should be strong communicators, capable of managing both financial detail and big-picture planning, and open to the integration of innovative accounting systems, including those enhanced by AI. Prior experience with nonprofit financial operations is preferred but not required.

About the Role
The Director reports directly to the CEO and is a member of the senior leadership team. They will oversee and support the Senior Manager of Administration and Finance and supervise the contracted services of a regional accounting firm. The Director works closely with the USEA Administration and Finance Committee, the Board of Governors, Area Treasurers, and staff across departments. The position also manages financial reporting and oversight for the USEA Foundation.

This is a high-impact role suited to a collaborative, detail-oriented, and proactive leader who is excited by the opportunity to modernize financial systems, implement emerging technologies, and strengthen organizational accountability and service.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Lead the development and management of the Association’s annual budget in coordination with department heads and the CEO
  • Present monthly and year-end financial reports to the Administration and Finance Committee, and the Board of Governors as needed
  • Direct and respond to the annual external audit, ensuring preparation of all materials and compliance with GAAP and internal policies in a timely manner
  • Oversee all financial functions for the USEA Foundation, including grant tracking, disbursements, and reporting on investment performance

Financial Operations and Oversight

  • Support the Senior Manager of Administration and Finance in daily transaction processing, member services, and reconciliation
  • Supervise the work of a contracted regional accounting firm responsible for financial data processing and reporting
  • Serve as the primary liaison to volunteer Area Treasurers, ensuring timely reconciliation of accounts, budget submissions, and support
  • Coordinate and manage sales tax filings, workers' compensation reporting, and corporate insurance policies (health, liability, auto, etc.)

Systems Innovation and Administration

  • Leverage tools such as QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, Right Networks, and CashPro to manage financial data (prior familiarity with all systems not required)
  • Champion the integration of modern accounting platforms, including cloud-based and AI-enhanced tools to improve accuracy, transparency, and workflow
  • Evaluate and enhance internal administrative procedures to streamline operations and ensure strong internal controls
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for staff, volunteers, contractors, and members with questions related to finance and administration

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in nonprofit, association, or mission-driven organizational finance
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Experience managing financial audits, budget development, and external financial partners
  • High attention to detail, integrity, and a commitment to accountability

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s in business administration or a related field
  • Experience supervising staff or managing outsourced financial service providers
  • Background in customer service or member-based organizations
  • Familiarity with the equestrian community and USEA’s mission and programs
  • Interest in or experience with AI-enhanced or cloud-based accounting technologies
  • Passion for innovation and improving financial systems and workflows
