Sharon White and Wundermaske Lead the Way after the First Day of Dressage at Millbrook Horse Trials

The first day of Advanced dressage at Millbrook Horse Trials (Millbrook, NY), part of the Adequan USEA Gold Cup/ PRO Tour Series, left Sharon White and Wundermaske atop the leaderboard.
The 11-year-old gelding (Weltbekannt –- Dear Rose) put in a lovely test, scoring a 25.3 to take the overnight lead in the division with the second half of the field to ride on Friday. The 2013 Advanced division winners Laine Ashker and Anthony Patch are just 1.3 penalty points behind to lie in provisional second. Phillip Dutton and Fernhill Fugitive were also impressive on a score of 27.8. The talented Fernhill horse, owned by Millbrook resident Tom Tierney, has matured over the last year to become more a consistent performer. Buck Davidson rode two of his three Advanced entries, The Apprentice and Wiley Post, to an identical score of 28.1 to tie for fourth place with Boyd Martin and Steady Eddie.
With forty-six riders in the Advanced division and nearly 560 entries, Millbrook Horse Trials is abuzz. Sharon White of Summit Point, West Virginia was delighted with Dale Clabaugh’s Wundermaske who felt wonderfully calm to her today despite all the activity on the grounds. “He was very relaxed and very obedient which is really a nice surprise,” said White. “In this sport all you want to do is to have them get a little better every time and he did that today, so I’m really thrilled.”
Allison Springer and Arthur will be the first pair into the ring on Friday morning as the rest of the field performs their dressage tests. White hopes to remain in the lead, but acknowledged that there were many good pairs who had yet to enter the ring.
Friday’s schedule at Millbrook features both dressage and cross country for the Beginner Novice through Training levels. Preliminary through Advanced are scheduled to complete dressage. Course designer Tremaine Cooper and his team have been putting the finishing touches on the tracks and with the recent rain, the footing looks to be in near perfect condition.
Millbrook Horse Trials is also the final designated event for the Triple Crown JYR PRO Scholarship Award on the east coast. The winner of the east coast scholarship will earn a week of training and board at an upper level rider’s facility, as well as a full compliment of tack from World Equestrian Brands.
In addition, USEA Area I and II juniors and young riders are participating in the Young Rider Team Challenge sponsored by Shires & Helite, which is adding more hype to all the competition and activities already in place.
