USEA Board Approves New Intro Level

Growing the sport of eventing in the United States remains a central goal of the United States Eventing Association (USEA) and its Membership Committee. Through feedback from members, coaches, and prospective participants, a common theme emerged: while interest in the sport is strong, the cross-country phase can present a barrier to entry for riders with limited experience outside of an arena setting.
In response, the USEA Membership Committee—working in collaboration with officials, coaches, and riders—is pleased to announce the addition of a welcoming new entry-level division, Intro. This division is designed to provide our youngest riders and those new to riding in open environments with an accessible introduction to the sport of eventing.
Recently approved by the USEA Board of Governors, the USEA staff are working to implement the Intro level later this summer. A key feature of this division is the allowance of coaching assistance throughout all three phases. Cross-country courses at the Intro level will be thoughtfully designed to build rider confidence outside the arena, while still offering the opportunity to experience the excitement of competing in a Horse Trial.
“We are very excited to introduce the Intro division, which invites newer riders and those from other disciplines to join our Horse Trials in a safe and fun level of competition,” said Siobhan O’Brien, USEA Board Member and Membership Committee Rep Chair.
USEA membership for horse and rider participation at the Intro level is optional. However, a full competing membership for riders and a limited or full registration for horses is required to accumulate year-end award points or to earn qualifications for Area Championships. The Intro division will not be offered at the USEA American Eventing Championships.
