The 2015 Adequan/FEI NAJYRC CH-J* ended as it began with Remington XXV ridden by Camila Grover-Dodge leading the way for Area II to the team Gold medal. After Area II teammate Morgan Booth and Twizzel withdrew during the jog, the pressure was on for the other three team members to hold off challenges from Areas V and VIII.

When the remaining three team members of Grover-Dodge along with Skyler Decker and Amanda Beale Clement were asked how they felt after Twizzel was withdrawn, they all admitted being shaken.

“I was devastated!“ said Decker. “We love Morgan and we love Twizzel. It was just so hard.”

Beale Clement added “we all got the news, cried and had a moment. Then we were like, okay ladies, we have to do this for Morgan. Let’s get it together and let’s go jump some double clear rounds.” The team added only one rail in the end and held tight to the gold medal.

Seventeen-year-old Grover-Dodge managed to finish on her dressage score, a 38.3, which was the only score below 40 in the competition, and earn the individual gold to add to the team. The 19-year-old Remington XXV owned by Grover-Dodge’s grandmother Densey Juvonen and once piloted by Boyd Martin and Caitlin Silliman showed that he was the class of the field throughout the event.

The silver medal went to Area VII’s Madelynn Snoozy and Udealer who jumped double clear to move up from fourth. Shelby Brost and Crimson claimed the bronze medal for their home area of Alberta & British Columbia.

The other celebrity horse in the field, the 19-year-old Westphalian gelding Twizzel who came to fame with Will Coleman, is reportedly in good shape according to Booth. She opted to withdraw him from the competition after presenting him to the officials with a few minor issues caused by the muddy conditions on cross-country day.

“He is good. He looked really good last night and jogged up well, and I wasn’t worried coming into the barn this morning. [This morning] he had a swollen eye and a bit of a raw spot on his white sock.” Booth added “He is just a really sensitive horse. Anything that happens, a bug bite or anything, he reacts very strongly. We knew exactly what the problem was and we hoped that as the morning went on it would improve but unfortunately we only had until 7:30 in the morning.” “We know that he is fine, and he will be fine for years to come. That was my main concern.”

Legendary rider and NAJYRC Area V coach, Mike Huber, and his Area V team were waiting in the wings should the remaining Area II combinations to falter, but that did not happen. The Area V team of Second Hand Rose with Margaret Stocker, Crimson Tide and Caroline Testi, Fable with Olivia Alland and Mercedes with Barrett Phillips only added 7.3 points to their overnight score to take home the silver medal.

The home state team from Area VIII of Jackie Lemastus on Tatton Winter, Hope Walden on Lily Langtry, Emily Hagan on Mr. Mom, and Mary Peabody Camp on Rivertown Lad earned the bronze medal adding 6 points to their overnight score. Team Coach Cathy Wieschoff was credited by all four riders with keeping them calm and in good spirits throughout the event.

Lemastus said “I have been lucky to ride with Cathy for the last three or four years, but to be in a championship setting and have her as my coach I wouldn’t want anyone else for my coach.” “She is great about bringing the team together she is just an all-around amazing coach.” Hagan added “She has been so positive and definitely comic relief for me because I have been so nervous.”

Huber Recognized for Years of Service to Young Riders

It has been an award winning year for Huber as he will be inducted into the U.S. Eventing Hall of Fame at the USEA Annual Meeting and Convention in 2015. Huber is retiring after more than 18 years of service as the Area V coach. After his team was awarded with the silver medal in the competition Huber (pictured left) was recognized for his contributions to the sport by the announcer. In the post competition press conference his team noted that having Huber as their coach in his final year was special.

“We all wanted come out and do our best. It is great that we got a medal for him” stated Alland.

Stocker noted that the silver lining is that the new team coach is much loved by the team. “Caroline and I train with him [Huber] at home and it is definitely sad that he is not going to be our coach next year, but we love Angela [Gryzwinski]. So we are excited for that.”

All three participants pulled multiple rails in show jumping, but Diane Portwood and Cinerescent were able to hold onto their overnight lead with two down to take home first place. Nicole Doolittle and Tops were second with Paige Pence and Class Action rounding out the division.
