Aiken, SC - May 15, 2026 - Opening day at Stable View set a vibrant stage for the 2026 USEA Intercollegiate & Interscholastic Eventing Championships, as teams from across the country arrived ready to compete, celebrate, and showcase the spirit that defines this unique event. With early divisions already underway and a full weekend of sport ahead, the excitement across the venue was unmistakable. It’s the happiest horse trial in the world for a reason, and day one wasted no time proving it.

Early in the day, riders in the Preliminary, Modified, and Training divisions set the tone with their dressage tests and show‑jumping rounds, giving their teammates plenty to cheer for from the sidelines. The rest of the competitors will join the action tomorrow as competition expands across all levels, promising a full day of excitement which will end with the infamous Hobby Horse Championship at 6:00 p.m. ET.

The championships’ signature Parade of Teams brought the entire venue to life as Intercollegiate and Interscholastic riders marched into the arena in full force with flags waving, mascots dancing, and school colors on full display. It marked a fitting start to the weekend and a preview of the camaraderie that defines this event year after year.

This year’s Intercollegiate championship welcomes 131 competitors across 34 teams, representing 16 schools from across the country. The Interscholastic Championship continues its rapid growth as well, featuring 83 IEL competitors on 22 teams representing 15 clubs. It’s the first year the horse trials is running as a standalone competition and it’s a testament to the strength and momentum of the USEA’s youth pipeline.

Competition resumes Saturday at 8:00 a.m. ET, with all three phases running throughout the day and plenty of opportunities for teams to rally behind their riders. With Stable View’s international quality cross country course and a field stacked with talent, the stage is set for an unforgettable weekend of sport.

About the USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Program

The USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Program was established in 2014 to provide a framework within which eventing teams and individual competitors could flourish at universities and colleges across the country. Many events across the country offer Intercollegiate Team Challenges where collegiate eventers can compete individually or in teams with their fellow students. In Intercollegiate Team Challenges, each rider’s score is multiplied by a coefficient appropriate for their level to account for differences in level difficulty, and then the individual scores are added together to determine the team score. The USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Championship is a capstone event for the program, which is held annually in the spring. The 2026 USEA Intercollegiate & IEL Championships will be held at Stable View in Aiken, South Carolina, on May 15-17. Click here to learn more about the Intercollegiate Eventing Program.

About the USEA Interscholastic Eventing League (IEL)

In August 2020, the USEA Board of Governors approved the creation of the USEA Interscholastic Eventing League (IEL) as an official program of the USEA. The mission of IEL is to unite junior riders who are in the 5th—12th grade and provide a supportive community through which students can continue to pursue their riding interests. A group of junior members in the 5th—12th grade who share a common bond, such as the same barn, school, Pony Club, or other connection, can register with the USEA as an IEL Club. The 2026 USEA Intercollegiate & IEL Championships will be held at Stable View in Aiken, South Carolina, on May 15-17. Click here to learn more about the Interscholastic Eventing League.
