Fast Facts: 2023 Tryon International Spring Three-Day Event

By Lindsay Berreth - USEA Staff

The Tryon International Spring Three-Day Event is next up on the busy spring calendar. Held at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina, this year’s top division, the CCI4*-L, features a group of 20 pairs, many who are coming from their final prep run in the Cosequin Lexington CCI4*-S (Lexington, Kentucky) two weeks ago.

The event also features a CCI1*-S, CCI2*-L, CCI2*-S, CCI3*-L, CCI3*-S, CCI4*-S, and an Advanced division for a total of 169 entries.

The USEA will be on site starting on Thursday, May 11 to cover all the action. If you’re competing at Tryon on a horse with a cool story, email Lindsay at [email protected] for a chance to be featured on useventing.com.

The CCI4*-L Field

  • Fresh off a big win in the Cosequin Lexington CCI4*-S, Canada’s Karl Slezak and Hot Bobo will be vying for the win.
  • Sharon White and Claus 63, recent winners of the inaugural Ocala CCI4*-S, will also take a shot for the title.
  • Tamie Smith and her daughter Kaylawna Smith-Cook each have a horse in the division. Smith will ride Elliot V, who was 10th in Kentucky two weeks ago. Smith-Cook has brought Passepartout from her Southern California base.
  • Doug Payne will ride his gorgeous gray, the U.S.-bred Camarillo.
  • Boyd Martin will be the busiest rider in the division with two—new ride this year Commando 3 and Miss LuLu Herself.
  • Liz Halliday-Sharp and Cooley Nutcracker are another pair who will challenge for the lead. They led the dressage in Kentucky but a pesky 11 penalties for activating a frangible device on cross-country dropped them to ninth place.
  • Hawley Bennett-Awad and her experienced campaigner Jollybo are rerouting from a retirement on cross-country at the Land Rover Kentucky CCI5*-L.
  • Of the 20 entries, five are mares (Jollybo, Miss LuLu Herself, Flower Girl, Hot Bobo, and Wakita 54)
  • The U.S., Canada, Sweden, and New Zealand will be represented this weekend.
