Fast Facts: 2022 Galway Downs International

By Meagan DeLisle - USEA Staff

The second-to-last CCI4*-L of the 2022 calendar year kicks off this week in Temecula, California at the Galway Downs International Event & H.T. This event features competition from the Beginner Novice level through the Preliminary national levels and has a CCI2*-L, CCI3*-L, and CCI4*-L as well. There are 44 horse and rider pairs lined up to contest the FEI divisions being offered at Galway, who will bring home the top prize?

The Field:

  • James Alliston’s CCI4*-L entry the 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding Paper Jam (Papparazzo x Reely Jamin XX), owned by his wife Helen Alliston, is coming into the weekend off of a recent win at the Advanced level last month at the Ram Tap H.T. and prior to that came home Reserve Champion in August in the $60,000 Adequan® USEA Advanced Final which took place during the 2022 USEA American Eventing Championships presented by Nutrena Feeds.
  • Kaylawna Smith-Cook has two entries in the four-star division: MB Group LLC’s 12-year-old German Sport Horse mare MB MaiBlume and Gretchen Cook’s 13-year-old German Sport Horse gelding Passepartout (Pasco x Preschel). Both horses had top-three finishes in the CCI4*-S at Twin Rivers in September of this year.
  • Rounding out the CCI4*-L entries is Sophia Click and her own 11-year-old Holsteiner gelding Quidproquo (Quidado x Waleila). This is the pair’s first long-format four-star of the 2022 season, but they are coming into the weekend at Galway Downs off of a top-ten finish in the Advanced division at Ram Tap just last month.
  • Alliston is the busiest rider of the CCI4*-L field with two entries in the CCI3*-L and one in the CCI2*-L as well.
  • Of all of the FEI divisions, the Thoroughbred is the most popular breed with eight entries across the board. Oldenburgs run a close second, however, with seven entries.
  • Galway Downs is serving as the first-ever West Coast host of the MARS Bromont Rising U25 program.

The Facts:

  • Alec Lochore (GBR) is the FEI technical delegate with Sue Ockendon (CAN) assisting.
  • Peter Gray (CAN) is the president of the ground jury of the CCI4*-L and will be assisted by Marilyn Payne (USA) and Robyn Fisher (USA).
  • Clayton Fredericks (AUS) is the cross-country course designer for the FEI divisions.
  • Marc Donovan (USA) is the show jumping course designer.
  • The CCI4*-L is a qualifier for the $60,000 Adequan USEA Advanced Final that will take place at the USEA American Eventing Championships presented by Nutrena Feeds.

Saddle Fit Simplified

Eventers who are new to the sport may feel a little overwhelmed by the often-misunderstood world of saddle fitting. Riders are often bombarded with information from peers online or self-described experts, putting them at risk of following bad advice related to equipment that impacts horse welfare perhaps more than any other piece of tack. Finding a qualified expert to answer these questions is crucial. Who better to turn to than both a qualified Master Saddle Fitter and a fourth-generation saddle designer to answer some of these questions?
