The anticipation is over. The finalists in the 2016 American Horse Publications Equine Media Awards (EMA) have been named today. “This is a big day for the 65 AHP members who now know that they placed in the top five of one or more of 64 classes,” says Chris Brune, AHP Executive Director.

Held since 1974, the AHP annual contest provides members with an opportunity to be recognized for excellence in equine publishing. This year’s contest for material published in 2015 drew entries from 98 members and 770 total entries.

The Equine Media Awards are open to AHP members only and offer a Publishing Media Division for publications and freelancers and a Business division for equine-related businesses, organizations, and colleges. “The classes are reviewed every year and based on member interest, the Business division was expanded to include several new classes,” says Brune.

The awards not only recognize excellence in equine media, but every entry is critiqued by the judges to encourage members to improve. “There are 28 professional judges involved in this year’s competition,” says Brune.

While the judges enjoy the process, it’s not always an easy decision to select the finalists. “I had a really difficult job choosing the winners in editorial design,” says one of the judges. “I went back and forth with my choices several times. There were so many excellent ones.”

The excitement isn’t over for the finalists. The next step is the announcement of the winners. Awards are placed first, second, third, or honorable mention, so every finalist is recognized for their achievement. The Equine Media Awards presentation will be held on Saturday evening, June 18, 2016, at the Sheraton Lake Buena Vista Resort in Orlando, Florida, during the AHP “May the Horse Be with You” Seminar.

The results of the Equine Media Awards will be available on the AHP website after the awards presentation in June.
