Cooley Cross Border Continues His Winning Ways with Kim Severson after Earning Champion Title as a Five-Year-Old Young Event Horse

Kim Severson must know that she’s got a young star on her hands. She piloted her 6-year-old Irish Sport Horse, Cooley Cross Border, to a win in the CCI1* at Virginia Horse Trials, May 23-26, in Lexington, VA. The pair finished on their dressage score of 43.7, leading the field of 35 competitors from start to finish.
It was less than a year ago that “Cross,” who was imported from Ireland in July 2011 and is owned by Severson and her mother Jackie, took home the blue in another very competitive field; In October 2012, he won the five-year-old division of the 2012 USEA Spalding Labs Young Event Horse East Coast Championships at Fair Hill.
After being identified as an exceptionally talented young horse at the Championships, Cross has continued his winning ways as he progressed to the Preliminary and CCI1* levels. Severson acquired Cross through Richard Sheane, who stamps the horses he chooses with the “Cooley” prefix. Cross ran 7 Training level horse trials in 2012-3 and won 5 of them. He also won his move up to Preliminary at Paradise Farm Horse Trials sponsored by ARENUS, February 15, 2013, and hasn’t been out of the ribbons since.
