Everyone's favorite day has arrived! Cross-country kicks off today in both the CCI3*-L and the CCI5*-L at the MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill and all three of the top riders in the five-star echoed the same word when asked about Ian Stark's farewell course: hard.
The leaderboard didn't change after the second day of dressage in the CCI3*-L and USEA Emerging Athlete U21 (EA21) athlete Kiersten Miller still holds onto the lead going into the second phase. Cross-country gets going at 9:00 a.m. with Boyd Martin and Christine, Thomas, and Tommie Turner's Holsteiner gelding Mo Chroi (Dinken x Pila) leading the pack as the first pair to go. Barring any holds on course, the three-star is set to wrap up around 11:45 a.m.
Our five-star friends will gallop out of the start box at 1:30 p.m. You can bet that U.S. eventing fans will be cheering on the overnight leaders, Tamie Smith and the 17-year-old German Sport Horse gelding Mai Baum (Loredano 2 x Ramira), who is owned by Alex Ahearn, Ellen Ahearn, and Eric Markell. They kick off phase two at 2:51 p.m.
