Surefire Farm provided a picturesque background for the hundreds of horses and riders who competed there from June 24 –26. A favorite on the summer calendar in Area II, the event attracts riders from up and down the east coast.

Manolo Blahnik had to take a quick peek before the water on the Intermediate XC course, but still managed to win the class.

Meghan O’Donoghue and Pirate finished in second place in the J.C. Chester $10,000 Intermediate Challenge.

Sally Cousins used her considerable experience to move from 19th to third in the Intermediate with Joule.

Claire Kelley and Orion XII made an impressive save in the water to finish the Intermediate in 17th place.

Juan Larrazabal and Running Wolf made the gigantic ditch and wall on the Intermediate course look like child’s play.

Caroline Martin made a big climb from 20th to 10th in the Intermediate.

Bright colors were out in full force on Sunday.

Meghan O’Donaghue piloted Cedric to a second place finish in his very first Horse Trials.

Surefire has some of the best volunteers around.

Charlotte Collier and Pandamonium tackle the infamous blue water with ease.

Unfortunately the Surefire jump crew was kept quite busy throughout the weekend.

Victoria Jessop piloted Marqo to a win in the Open Beginner Novice-B division.

Boyd Martin was all smiles after a clean show jumping round on his new ride, Quinn Himself.

Half brothers, Polaris and Quinn Himself, head back to the trailers after successful show jumping rounds.

Helga Schroeder and WHF Zula earned second place in the very competitive Junior Beginner Novice Division.

The VIP Volunteers: Ed and Leanne Barnett Dedicate Nearly 40 Years to Volunteering

Last month, readers met VIP Volunteer Rebecca Proetto, who volunteered at the MARS Maryland 5 Star horse inspection. This month, the focus turns to husband and wife Ed and Leanne Barnett who introduced Proetto to the art of running an efficient horse inspection at Maryland. Ed and Leanne undertake a 12-hour drive from their home in Indiana to Maryland just to volunteer at the event.

In Memoriam: As You Like It (1990-2024)

The USEA is saddened to share the passing of Sara Kozumplik’s five-star partner As You Like It at the age of 34. The gelding died in his sleep at his retirement home at Kozumplik's parents' residence.
