Lexington, KY - A modification to the Veterinary Regulations was approved at the 2011 FEI General Assembly held in Buenos Aires. Beginning January 1, 2013, all horses newly-registered with the FEI must be microchipped. (2012 FEI Article 1011.1.2.3). The microchip must be compatible with ISO 11784 and ISO 11785, and all microchip information must be entered in the horse's passport and reported to the USEF. This requirement applies to initial FEI registration only.
The standard microchip number consists of 15 digits, the first three identify the manufacturer or country code and the remaining numbers are unique and non-duplicated. The technical concept of animal identification described is based on the principle of radio-frequency identification (RFID). These numbers represent the unique identifier that will be associated with a specific horse from date of implant until the animal's death.
Check with your veterinarian on how to get a microchip for your horse.
ISO 11784 and ISO 11785 compliant microchips for implant in U.S. horses are commonly available and include the following:
134.2-kHz microchips:
Bayer ResQ®
HomeAgain®/Digital Angel
USEF recommends that all horses initially registering with the FEI after December 31, 2012, be scanned for existing microchips prior to a new microchip being implanted.

Germany’s Michael Jung hasn’t competed in a five-star since the last time he won the Kentucky Three-Day Event in 2022 with his longtime partner fischerChipmunk FRH, but his love for this event and his horse’s readiness compelled him to return this year and break an all-time record for lowest dressage score at this event (which they set at that 2022 event with a score of 20.1) at the same time. They lead the five-star field with a nearly 10-point lead on a score of 18.6.
“It's day 1, so I'm not getting too excited yet. There's a long, long way to go in this competition,” said Phillip Dutton after his dressage test aboard Denim in the Cosequin CCI4*-S leaving the pair in the overnight lead upon the conclusion of the first day of dressage at the 2025 Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event.
Are you following along with the action from home this weekend? Or maybe you're competing at an event and need information fast. Either way, we’ve got you covered!
And they're off! The first official day of competition at the 2025 Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event (K3DE) begins today and we have a schedule jam-packed with dressage for both the four- and five-star fields.
