Mark Phillips On His Course

By USEA | September 7, 2008

Mark Phillips was happy with the way the course held up in spite of all the rain that has fallen at Burghley in the last couple of days. “This was a tough course but it was made more difficult because of the rain,” he said. It was, though, definitely a course for the experienced which was evidenced by the names at the top of the leaderboard.

When asked about the mushrooms at Coutts Curve (Fence Numbers 25 and 26) that caused many a rider to walk their horse back to the barn, including daughter Zara, Mark said it was the first one that caused the problems. “It did not ride well last year so we moved it to give the riders a better line, but that didn’t work either. It will not be there next year,” he said. “This was the biggest course of the year and the cream really rose to the top. There will be a few dents in the pride of some riders, but those heal quickly and they will be back to try again.”

Thirty seven riders will show jump tomorrow in reverse order of standing.
