After “familiarization” in the main arena, the horses were exquisitely prepared for the first horse inspection. The riders presented their horses not only to the ground jury of Andrew Bennie (NZL), Christoph Hess (GER), and Sandy Phillips (GBR) but also to the many spectators who were eager to see the athletes of this year’s competition.

Fifty horses were accepted to move on to dressage tomorrow in the Turniergesellschaft Luhmühlen CCI4*. Only one horse, Master Tredstep, ridden by Aidan Keogh (IRL), was not accepted upon representation after being sent to the hold box. Simply Sox, ridden by Julie Tew (GBR), and Billy Beware, ridden by Pippa Funnell (GBR), were also sent to the hold but passed upon reinspection.

The small but mighty North American contingent is made up of Liz Halliday-Sharp and Deniro Z, the Deniro Syndicate and Ocala Horse Properties' 10-year-old KWPN (Zapatero VDL x Zonne-Trend), and Boyd Martin and the Shamwari 4 Syndicate’s 16-year-old Hanoverian (Star Regent xx x Donnice) Shamwari 4.

Tomorrow’s dressage kicks off at 8:10 a.m./2:10 a.m. EDT with Peter Thomsen (GER) and Horseware Nobleman in the Meßmer Trophy CIC3*.

Later, at 1:10 p.m./7:10 a.m. EDT, Sandra Auffarth and Opgun Louvo will perform the test ride for the CCI4* presented by DHL before Jesse Campbell (NZL) and Amsterdam 21 take to the arena at 1:30 p.m./7:30 a.m. EDT as first competitors.

Both U.S. riders will complete their dressage tests tomorrow. Liz Halliday-Sharp and Deniro Z are first out for the Americans at 3:32 p.m./9:32 a.m. EST and Boyd Martin and Shamwari will perform their test at 4:40 p.m./10:40 a.m. EST.

Live streaming of dressage will be available through Luhmühlen’s YouTube Channel. Click here for more information.

The 2024 K3DE Daily: First Horse Inspection

Lights, cameras, action! The first formal horse inspection (which some might informally refer to as "the jog") at the 2024 Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event (K3DE) takes place this afternoon at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. While this part of the event is a fan-favorite historically based on the impeccable turnout of the horses and the stylish and forward fashion choices of the riders (we are looking at you Boyd Martin in hopes that you bring back the American flag suit circa 2022), it serves a very important purpose: ensuring that each horse is fit, sound, and ready to compete at the five-star level.
