Fast Facts: 2023 Longines Luhmühlen Horse Trials

The fourth of seven five-stars worldwide is taking place from June 15-18 at the Longines Luhmühlen Horse Trials in Luhmühlen, Germany.

The five-star entry list is chock-full of superstar horses and riders, with several pairs having rerouted from the Badminton Horse Trials (England) in May. The event also features a CCI4*-S which serves as the German national championship.

The USEA will be on site at Luhmühlen on Thursday to bring you coverage of the five-star!

The Facts

  • Forty pairs will compete in the CCI5*-L, including six riders from the U.S.—Boyd Martin (Tsetserleg TSF, Luke 140, and Fedarman B), Tamie Smith (Solaguayre California), Sydney Elliott (QC Diamantaire), Matt Flynn (Wizzerd), Hallie Coon (Global EX) and British-based Katherine Coleman (RLE Limbo Kaiser). Eleven countries are represented.

    Of the U.S. entries, Fedarman B, Luke 140, and Sologuayre Calfornia are making their five-star debuts. It will be Coleman and RLE Limbo Kaiser’s first five-star together. The gelding completed Pau (France) in 2020 with British rider Rosa Onslow.
  • Great Britain has the most entries in the five-star at 18. Pairs to look out for include current World Champion Yasmin Ingham on Rehy DJ, Pippa Funnell on MGH Grafton Street, and Laura Collett with London 52 and Dacapo.
  • There are 50 pairs in the CCI4*-S, including U.S. riders Hallie Coon (Cute Girl) and Dan Kreitl (Carmango), making his European eventing debut. Twelve countries are represented, with home country Germany having the most entries.
  • Switzerland’s Felix Vogg and Colero made history last year as the first Swiss pair to win the five-star division, and they return this year to try to win the title again.
  • Several five-star winners are in the field, including Smith, Martin, Funnell, Great Britain’s Oliver Townend, and New Zealand’s Tim Price, a former Luhmühlen winner.
  • Germany’s Ingrid Klimke (EQUISTRO’S Siena Just Do It), a former Luhmühlen winner, will be in the CCI4*-S this weekend alongside Julia Krajewski (Nickel and Ero de Cantraie), who was the 2021 Tokyo Olympic champion on Amande de B’Neville.
  • The 2021 Luhmühlen five-star winners Mollie Summerland and Charly van ter Heiden will compete in the CCI4*-S.
