The Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE) Horse Trials in Landrum, SC is pleased to announce local event rider and trainer Beth Perkins as the new cross-country course designer. She takes over for Greg Schlappi, who after several years as the designer and builder at the beloved Area III event, is focusing on building customized portable jumps and designing for private schooling facilities.
In the midst of the hustle and bustle of a 500-entry event at Virginia International Horse Trials, co-organizer Angela Bowles took time to celebrate and reflect on the lengthy and impactful career of her longtime partner, Novelle. After 14 years eventing, Novelle has been officially retired from competition.
Nearly 500 horses competed at VHT International May 26-29, 2022 at the sprawling Virginia Horse Center in Lexington. Only five CCI2*-L horse-and-rider combinations show jumped double-clear Sunday afternoon, and two of those rounds were produced by Lucia Strini (USA). With both of her mounts finishing on their dressage scores, Strini took home first and third place in a class of 28 starters.
I left the dressage arena laughing. My horse had just done his very best screaming giraffe impression to earn himself a less-than-sufficient 47 percent. I could have been upset, but I’d have a chance to try again later in the day. That’s the beauty of schooling shows, after all.

The Virginia Horse Trials (VHT) in Lexington, Va. is gearing up for the annual spring CCI/CIC and Horse Trials and USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Championship May 24-27. Around 450 horses from Beginner Novice through the CIC2* level will descend upon the Virginia Horse Center next week.
The United States Eventing Association (USEA) is pleased to announce that the 2018 USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Championship will be held at Virginia Horse Trials (VHT) in Lexington, Va. during the Virginia CCI/CIC and Horse Trials May 24-27, 2018. VHT hosted the inaugural Intercollegiate Championship in 2016 as well as the second edition this year. The Championship will return to VHT for one more year before moving on to a new venue.
The USEA is looking forward to the second annual USEA Intercollegiate Championships at the Virginia Horse Trials May 25-28, 2017. Competitors are urged to read the previous press release, which includes pertinent information about the Championships, including scoring and team dynamics as well as stabling and prize information.
