By USEA | October 13, 2015

Tik Maynard:

Tik Maynard has studied with some of the best horse trainers in the world including: Karen and David O'Connor, Johann Hinnemann, Ingrid Klimke, and Anne Kursinski. After learning how the O'Connor’s start their horses, Tik was inspired to spend time learning about Horsemanship from people like Jonathan Field and Bruce Logan.

Today, Tik runs his own training business out of New Jersey and Florida. His focus is on young horses and bringing them along to competition. Tik understands the importance of a solid foundation as well as the thrills of upper level eventing. Tik joins natural horsemanship with top-level training in order to create confident, healthy and well-rounded horses.

Tik Maynard Seminar: How Horses Learn to Event

Often people learn about proper riding position before they learn why and how a horse learns. For anyone interested in bringing along young horses, or for teaching a horse of any age how to do something new or better, understanding how a horse thinks and learns in invaluable.

A horse that understands his job will be safer and perform better. A horse that runs without looking or is confused may still be able to be cajoled around a course, but that is not fun for the horse or the rider - and it is certainly not safe.

By using a blend of event training and natural horsemanship techniques you can develop both the body and mind of a horse in a way that promotes the wellbeing and safety of both horse and rider.

How do you know when to move a horse up? Is it possible to predict what makes a horse scared or what motivates different horses? How can we use that to our advantage in training in order to achieve confidence and relaxation?

Key learning objectives:

1. Take a look from an evolutionary perspective at why horses react the way they do

2. Understand from a biological standpoint what drives a horse to learn

3. Start to feel from a training perspective the difference between making a horse do something and helping him understand the game
