The 2017 USEA Annual Meeting and Convention may have come and gone, but thanks to our friends at Ride On Video you will have the chance to relive the action as we share videos of the different sessions!
If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the anatomy of the hoof and how the farrier makes decisions about how to trim and shoe a horse, then you won’t want to miss Bill Merfy’s presentation from the 2017 USEA Annual Meeting and Convention. Merfy gives a basic overview of the anatomy of the hoof before going into more detail on his process of shoeing a horse, including distributing the horse’s weight across the surface area of the hoof and controlling the breakover point for the health of the deep digital flexor tendon, and gives some examples of shoeing issues and how to correct them.
Bill Merfy is a graduate of the Oklahoma State Horseshoeing school. Has been a farrier for 35 years, is a member of the Western States Farrier Association, and was the farrier in residence for 13 years at the University of California, Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. He taught veterinary students hoof anatomy and care as well as how to shoe for a variety of conditions.
