West Coast Collegiate Eventing League Brings College Eventers Together
For years, other equestrian sports have enjoyed the benefits of intercollegiate competition. Hunter-jumpers, western riders and dressage enthusiasts all have well established collegiate leagues; in 2010, the UC Davis Event Team created a league for collegiate eventers.
The West Coast Collegiate Eventing League (WCCEL) is open to all college students, regardless of whether they attend community college or graduate school. The WCCEL operates as a division of select existing USEA-recognized events; riders sign up for the collegiate division at the show and are assigned to teams of three or four. Riders compete at any and all levels as scoring coefficients are used to even out the differences in scores due to differing levels. At the end of the event the top teams and riders get ribbons and prizes such as reins and custom brow bands from sponsor Delfina Saddlery.
The WCCEL allows students to compete as a team while representing their school and gives eventers in college a way to connect with one another and build a sense of community. The league is also committed to helping students organize official school teams across the country. Having a recognized team gives students access to funding for competing and can effectively introduce other riders to the sport of eventing. Intercollegiate competition is an exciting new avenue for the eventing community and will hopefully continue to grow.
