New for the 2026 season, the USEA Foundation has established the TEAPRO Grant (Training and Education in the Art of Pace and Riding in the Open). This grant is available to organizers, trainers, education groups, and others to provide opportunities for riders and horses to practice galloping, trot sets, and other forms of riding in the open.

It is also aimed at education about conditioning the horse and building endurance and fitness for both horses and riders. "It is difficult for many in our sport to learn to art of riding at pace and even to find places where they can ride outside a ring before coming to a competition," explained Pat Maykuth, the eventing licensed official who hatched the idea for this new grant. "Our goal is to further education in these skills and to support many of the sport's stakeholders in doing so; riders, trainers, organizers, coaches, clinicians, etc."

Applications for this grant will be taken on a rolling basis and can be used in a variety of ways to help develop this skill set. Examples include funding for a clinician to conduct a clinic on how to gallop horses in the open, clinics to develop a feel for pace at walk, trot and canter over terrain, clinics to educate riders on how to safely and effectively build the fitness level of their horse and themselves, funds to build portable steeplechase jumps that may be used to create a course at one or more facilities, funds for the equipment required to accurately measure and set a galloping or trot set track, etc.

Questions about this program can be directed to Katherine Cooper, USEA Foundation Development Officer, [email protected].
