Day 1 at the MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill was full of excitement as a U.S. horse and rider pair took the overnight lead in the five-star, the CCI3*-L got underway with a USEA Emerging Athletes U21 (EA21) rider topping the field, and the first of the two USEA Young Event Horse (YEH) East Coast Championships crowned its champion. With the remainder of dressage for both the three- and five-star today, we could see some shakeups in the leaderboard.
In the YEH East Coast 5-Year-Old Championship, there are a few familiar faces in the top-10 after the lineup of 41 horses completed their dressage and conformation portions of their test yesterday. Today they must contest the jumping and galloping phases to seal their fate. The competition kicks off at 8:30 a.m. in the Timber Field. You can learn more about the Championships here. If you are not local, don't forget! You can watch ClipMyHorse's livestream here.
In the main arena, CCI3*-L dressage kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with Courtney Cooper riding BEST Group's 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Briarhill Excel Star Take 2 (King's Comet x Briarhill Cruise) leading the field of 27 who still need to execute their dressage tests.
Then its back to the five-star fun at 2:00 p.m. We will see Great Britain's Bubby Upton make her Maryland 5 Star debut aboard the 14-year-old Holsteiner gelding Cola (Catoko x Vanessa XII), who is owned by Rachel Upton. Twelve competitors are left to compete in the first phase before they move on to tackling Ian Stark's impressive cross-country course.

A field of 30 promising 4-year-olds completed all phases of the Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse (YEH) East Coast 4-year-old Championship today, and it was Leslie Morse’s homebred Dutch Warmblood mare Prime Star (Kingston x Stradiveria), ridden by Madison Temkin, who rose to the occasion. “Star” held the top spots in both the conformation and dressage phases and second place across the jumping and galloping phases to secure the champion title on a cumulative score of 88.76.
The main arena at the MARS Maryland 5 Star opened Thursday morning with dressage tests for the CCI3*-L field. This division is serving as the U.S. Equestrian Federation CCI3*-L Eventing National Championship. Kiersten Miller is currently leading the field after producing a score of 28.4 aboard Mama Mia, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare (Indoctro x Lysienne II) owned by Miller and bred by Heather Crespo.
Cosby Green’s been partnered with Highly Suspicious for seven years, and she admits, their partnership didn’t have the strongest start. “I probably had no business buying him when I did at 16; couldn't ride one side of him, scored consistently in the 40s and had lots of 20s [on cross-country], and he was just really difficult,” the 23-year-old said.
