NBC Today Show Highlights Young Eventer

By USEA | November 24, 2009

This morning on the NBC Today Show, they featured young eventer Elizabeth Walters' recovery to ride in the Middle Tennessee Horse Trials. Over a year ago, Walters, 16, of Florence, Alabama, was diagnosed with a rare type of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Since then, she spent ten months working with the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital where she underwent very successful treatment for her cancer. Elizabeth’s trainer Candi Wheeler took care of Elizabeth’s beloved event horse Montini, often sending Elizabeth photos to keep her spirits high during the rough bouts of chemotherapy. Find out how Montini helped Elizabeth pull through her treatment successfully, and the accomplishments they achieved at their first event back in the saddle at the Middle Tennessee Horse Trials.

Marlo Thomas, the National Outreach Director for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital supported Elizabeth’s decision to get back in the saddle. “One of the things we’re concerned about is the quality of life – we want her to get back to her life.”
