Lasting bonds: Riding provides comfort for local teen

By Mark Berman | July 9, 2009

From the Roanoke Times

Riding has been a comfort for Huxley Greer, helping her cope with the loss of both parents at age 13.

WIRTZ -- When Huxley Greer started riding in horse shows, her parents were there to cheer her on.

Juel Rittenhouse-Greer used to ride in shows herself, before Huxley was born. She became Huxley's tutor, passing on her knowledge to the youngest of her five children.

Huxley's dad, John Greer, was initially terrified as he watched Huxley and her horse in the jumping events. He loved bragging about her, though.

But in June of 2004, John died of a bacterial infection in his blood.

The following month, Rittenhouse-Greer died of cervical cancer.

Greer was just 13 years old.
