The first Spalding Labs/USEA Young Event Horse competition of 2009 on the West Coast took place on Thursday, April 16 at the Twin Rivers International Three Day Event.

Seventeen four- and five-year-olds were presented to three qualified judges from the FEI ground jury.

Top honors went to the five-year-old grey Holsteiner stallion Claire Du Lune ridden by Robyn Fisher. Claire Du Lune received an overall score of 87.75% which was the highest score of the day for all the four- and five-year-olds. Robyn exclaimed, “I love the this horse!” after her jumping round on Claire Du Lune. Claire Du Lune is by Contendor from the famous Holsteiner Cor de le Bryere lines.

The second placed five-year-old was Hummer, a black Holsteiner gelding owned by Kirsten Strain. Hummer was right on the heels of the winner, less than 0.25% behind.

The top four-year-old was Vivachi, a bay Holsteiner mare. Vivachi, a Nimmerdor granddaughter received a score of 78.99% (which was good enough for 5th of all the four- and five-year-olds).

Purisma’s Angelina, another bay Holsteiner mare, was the 2nd placed four-year-old with a good score of 73.34%

The top three five-year-olds finished with scores in the 80% range and most of the horses in both classes received at least a score of 70% “The quality of horses was great, especially in the 5yo division,” said the ring steward.

“It was easy to find volunteers for the Young Horse competition, as lots of people were interested to see the event take place” said Andrea Baxter, a rider and coordinator of the event.

The conformation phase was judged by Ana Schravesande of Mexico. The highest score she gave was to the overall 2nd placed 5yo, Hummer.

Dressage judge, Janis Linan of the USA gave her highest score to the overall and 5yo winner, Claire du Lune

Jumping judge, Ulrich Schmitz gave his highest score to the overall 3rd placed 5yo, Project Runway a paint Trakehner gelding by the eventing Olympic stallion, Windfall II.

The riders all seemed to have fun and the event ran smoothly. Twin Rivers looks forward to hosting their next YEH test on July 12, 2009.

The 2024 DK3DE Daily: First Horse Inspection

Lights, cameras, action! The first formal horse inspection (which some might informally refer to as "the jog") at the 2024 Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event (DK3DE) takes place this afternoon at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. While this part of the event is a fan-favorite historically based on the impeccable turnout of the horses and the stylish and forward fashion choices of the riders (we are looking at you Boyd Martin in hopes that you bring back the American flag suit circa 2022), it serves a very important purpose: ensuring that each horse is fit, sound, and ready to compete at the five-star level.
