By Meagan DeLisle - USEA Staff , Leslie Mintz

It’s finally here! After being selected as the fall location for a second CCI5*-L in the U.S. in 2017, the inaugural Maryland 5 Star will take place at Fair Hill in Elkton, Md. this week starting with the first horse inspection today. There are 48 horse and rider pairs in the five-star field hoping to bring home the first Maryland 5 Star victory. Who do you think will be leading the victory gallop?

The Field:

  • The inaugural Maryland 5 Star CCI5*-L has 48 horse and rider pairs set to present at the first horse inspection on Wednesday. There are 76 entries in the CCI3*-L and over 80 entries across both the 4 and 5-year-old Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse East Coast Championships.
  • There are six countries represented in the field of CCI5*-L competitors with pairs from the U.S., Australia, France, Canada, Great Britain, and New Zealand. U.S. riders make up 63% of the field.
  • There is CCI5*-L royalty set to contest the five-star track. Riders with previous CCI5*-L wins on their records include Oliver Townend, Phillip Dutton, Clayton Fredericks, Jonelle Price, and Tim Price. There are also several Olympians in the field with gold medalists Townend, Astier Nicolas, Dutton, and Leslie Law hoping to add another win to their resume.
  • Three riders are making their five-star debut. Emma Lomangino will be making her first five-star appearance aboard her own 17-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Master Frisky back to the CCI5*-L level (who previously competed at the level with Boyd Martin in 2015. Both Ashlynn Meuchel and Lexi Scovil are going to give the level a go with five-star first-time mounts, with Meuchel riding Ashley Creek Stables’ 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Emporium and Scovil aboard her own 11-year-old Zangersheide gelding Chico’s Man VDF Z.
  • In addition to Meuchel and Scovil’s mounts, four other horses will attempt their first five-star at Maryland: Morswood, Candy King, RF Cool Play, and Babylon De Gamma.
  • Boyd Martin has two horses entered in the CCI5*-L, but he has competed two other entries up to the level: Steady Eddie and Master Frisky.
  • The majority of the field are under the age of 40, with only 17 riders 40 and above. Phillip Dutton is the most senior rider on the roster at the age of 58 and Ema Klugman is the youngest at 23.
