In this excerpt from the full educational video, Phillip Dutton coaches a group of riders through different exercises designed to help improve the horse’s adjustability. First, riders navigate two cross-rails on a bounce distance followed by four strides on a 90 degree turn to a second set of cross-rails. Riders roll back to the exercise the opposite direction, this time putting five strides between the two bounces. This exercise proves to be easy for some horses and tougher for others and Dutton encourages the riders to let their horses jump freely as well as turn in the air to get to the shorter distance. From there riders move onto a one stride exercise – a skinny vertical to a square oxer – to encourage the horses to move forward. Dutton reinforces the importance of keeping your horse moving positively in front of the leg. Ultimately a bending line to a corner is added to the exercise to further test the horse’s adjustability.
