Fast Facts: Maryland 5 Star

It’s finally here! After being selected as the fall location for a second CCI5*-L in the U.S. in 2017, the inaugural Maryland 5 Star will take place at Fair Hill in Elkton, Md. this week starting with the first horse inspection today. There are 48 horse and rider pairs in the five-star field hoping to bring home the first Maryland 5 Star victory. Who do you think will be leading the victory gallop?

The Field:

  • The inaugural Maryland 5 Star CCI5*-L has 48 horse and rider pairs set to present at the first horse inspection on Wednesday. There are 76 entries in the CCI3*-L and over 80 entries across both the 4 and 5-year-old Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse East Coast Championships.
  • There are six countries represented in the field of CCI5*-L competitors with pairs from the U.S., Australia, France, Canada, Great Britain, and New Zealand. U.S. riders make up 63% of the field.
  • There is CCI5*-L royalty set to contest the five-star track. Riders with previous CCI5*-L wins on their records include Oliver Townend, Phillip Dutton, Clayton Fredericks, Jonelle Price, and Tim Price. There are also several Olympians in the field with gold medalists Townend, Astier Nicolas, Dutton, and Leslie Law hoping to add another win to their resume.
  • Three riders are making their five-star debut. Emma Lomangino will be making her first five-star appearance aboard her own 17-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Master Frisky back to the CCI5*-L level (who previously competed at the level with Boyd Martin in 2015. Both Ashlynn Meuchel and Lexi Scovil are going to give the level a go with five-star first-time mounts, with Meuchel riding Ashley Creek Stables’ 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Emporium and Scovil aboard her own 11-year-old Zangersheide gelding Chico’s Man VDF Z.
  • In addition to Meuchel and Scovil’s mounts, four other horses will attempt their first five-star at Maryland: Morswood, Candy King, RF Cool Play, and Babylon De Gamma.
  • Boyd Martin has two horses entered in the CCI5*-L, but he has competed two other entries up to the level: Steady Eddie and Master Frisky.
  • The majority of the field are under the age of 40, with only 17 riders 40 and above. Phillip Dutton is the most senior rider on the roster at the age of 58 and Ema Klugman is the youngest at 23.
  • Ireland and the United States are tied for breeding the most horses with 12 each.
  • Of the field, only seven of the horses entered in the CCI5*-L are mares: Stella Artios, Jollybo, Galloway Sunrise, Classic Moet, K.E.C. Zara, Indy 500, and On Cue.
  • The Irish Sport Horse is the most represented breed in the lineup with 13 horses descending from Irish bloodlines. The runner-up is the Thoroughbred with 11 entries.
  • Of the 11 Thoroughbred entries, six were bred in the U.S. while the remaining five were bred in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, and France.

The Facts:

  • Alex Lochore (GBR) is the technical delegate with Andrew Temkin (USA) assisting.
  • Angela Tucker (GBR) is the president of the ground jury of the CCI5*-L competition and will be assisted by Martin Plewa (GER) and Mark Weissbecker (USA).
  • Ian Stark (GBR) is the cross-country course designer.
  • Ken Krome (USA) is the show jumping course designer.

How to Watch:

The entire CCI5*-L, including Wednesday’s horse inspection, will be available via livestream through USEF Network in North America and through Horse & Country outside North America. USEF Network will also provide exclusive coverage of the CCI3*-L. Additionally, press conferences will be livestreamed through the event’s Facebook page. Not a member of USEF? MPT will broadcast the event live on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, while Saturday’s cross-country phase will be shown that evening from 5:00 -9:00 p.m. EDT.

    • Thu., Oct. 14: Dressage - 1:00-4:30 p.m. (live)
    • Fri., Oct. 15: Dressage - 1:00-4:30 p.m. (live)
    • Sat., Oct. 16: Cross country - 5:00-9:00 p.m. (from earlier that day)
    • Sun., Oct. 17: Showjumping & awards - 1:00-3:30 p.m. (live)

    • 8:00 a.m. - YEH 5-year-old Championship dressage and conformation
    • 10:00 a.m. - YEH 4-year-old Championship jumping and galloping
    • 1:00 p.m. - CCI5*-L dressage

    Friday, October 15

    • 8:00 a.m. - CCI3*-L dressage
    • 8:00 a.m. - YEH 5-year-old Championship jumping and galloping
    • 1:00 p.m. - CCI5*-L dressage

    Saturday, October 16

    • 9:00 a.m. - CCI3*-L cross country
    • 1:00 p.m. - CCI5*-L cross country

    Sunday, October 17

    • 8:00 a.m. - CCI3*-L second horse inspection
    • 8:30 a.m. - CCI5*-L second horse inspection
    • 9:30 a.m. - CCI3*-L show jumping
    • 1:00 p.m. - CCI4*-L show jumping

    Fast Facts: 2024 Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse West Coast Championships

    The second event in the two-leg Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse (YEH) Championships starts tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 18 at Twin Rivers Ranch in Paso Robles, California and continues through Saturday, Oct. 19. Today, competitors have one more chance to earn their spot in the Dutta. Corp YEH West Coast Championships this week during Twin Rivers’ Last Chance Qualifier, which will see one 4-year-old and five 5-year-olds attempt to secure a 70% of higher to finalize their qualification.
