Call for Nominations: 2024 USEA Appreciation Awards

It's that time of year again! The United States Eventing Association (USEA) is excited to announce the 2024 USEA Appreciation Awards. This is your chance to celebrate the remarkable contributions and achievements within our community. Whether it's the dedication of a tireless volunteer, the courage of a seasoned competitor, or the impact of an inspiring coach, we want to hear your stories!

Why Participate?

These awards are more than just recognition; they're a celebration of the people who make our sport extraordinary. Every nomination brings to light the individuals who embody the spirit of eventing and contribute to the success and growth of our community. This is your opportunity to give a deserving individual the recognition they deserve and to share their inspirational stories with the entire USEA family.

Award Categories:

  • Courtney C. Reeves Memorial Trophy: For the young individual who exemplifies sportsmanship, the spirit of the sport, and who gives back to the eventing community.
  • Ironmaster Trophy: presented to the individual that exemplifies fortitude and courage. Open to anyone associated with the sport: volunteer, spectator, official, trainer, competitor, groom, or grounds-keeper.
  • Vintage Cup: Celebrating our members aged 60 and over who continue to compete at any level in recognized USEA competitions and display outstanding sportsmanship.
  • Sue Hershey Award: Honors an ECP-certified instructor who exemplifies the values, commitment, and character of the ECP program and who has inspired students in the sport of eventing, with their instruction, encouragement, and long-term dedication to teaching correct horsemanship and stable management skills. Sue Hershey dedicated over 20 years to the development and continued progression of the Eventing Coaches Program.
  • Cornerstone Instructor’s Award: Recognizing the lower level instructor who has inspired riders in the sport of eventing with their encouragement and long-term dedication teaching basic horsemanship skills.
  • Liz Cochran Memorial Grooms Award: Awarded to an eventing groom who has shown dedication to the sport and the horses they serve.
  • As You Like It Owner’s Award: Presented to an outstanding owner who has had a large influence on a rider’s career and who has made an exceptional contribution to the sport of eventing.
  • Above and Beyond Event Personnel Award: Awarded to an event organizer, secretary, volunteer, or other staff member who throughout the year went “above and beyond.”
  • Amateur Impact Award: Awarded to an adult amateur that embodies a dedication to the sport of eventing, outstanding sportsmanship, and has been a direct impact on eventing in North America.

Changes to GR838 Addressing Unethical Treatment of a Horse

At US Equestrian, we fully believe that the care and welfare of horses, both inside and outside of the competition arena, must be held to the highest standards and levels of ethical behavior. 2025 ECP Symposium, Hosted by Galway Downs, Moves West on Jan. 14-16

The United States Eventing Associations’ (USEA) Eventing Coaches Program (ECP) is pleased to announce the dates and location of the upcoming 2025 USEA ECP Symposium, hosted by Galway Downs. The annual ECP Symposium, which is typically held in the southeast U.S., will be moving West next year to further open the door to education to a wider audience of interested candidates. The symposium will now be hosted on Jan. 14-16, at Galway Downs in Temecula, California.

Pressure Proof with Daniel Stewart: Feedback Rehearsals

Last month we discussed flooding and exposure therapy, two techniques that help us overcome things that overwhelm us. While both are very effective, there are two unfortunate problems with them: (1) some of the things that overwhelm us require more practice than we’re able to give while in the saddle (like twice a week) and (2) some of the things that overwhelm us aren’t exactly the kind of things we want to practice (like falling or reacting to a spook).
