Over 400 horses galloped through the pine trees last weekend at the Carolina Horse Park for the sixth annual Cloud 11~Gavilan North LLC Carolina International CCI and Horse Trials in Raeford, N.C. By Sunday afternoon 11 horses and riders earned blue ribbons, but for the rest, they had their memories of another event in the books.
It was a great weekend of competition at the Cloud 11~Gavilan North LLC Carolina International CCI and Horse Trial in Raeford, N.C., and the USEF/USET Foundation North American Futures Team Challenge added an extra element of excitement to the event.
Buck Davidson and Carlevo were the last pair to canter into the show jumping arena in the Advanced division at the Cloud 11~Gavilan North LLC Carolina International and while they had been sitting in second overnight the win was in their grasp – they just needed to keep all the rails up.
At last year’s edition of the Cloud 11~Gavilan North LLC Carolina International, Elisabeth Halliday-Sharp could have finished in first and second, but cross-country time penalties kept her from the win. Halliday-Sharp wasn’t about to let history repeat itself and set out on cross-country with her first CCI4*-S mount, Deniro Z, on a mission.
All three of Elisabeth Halliday-Sharp’s CCI4*-S horses are now sitting inside the top-10 at the Cloud 11~Gavilan North LLC Carolina International after jumping a trio of clear rounds over Marc Donovan’s show jumping course today.
A few years ago, Elisabeth Halliday-Sharp decided that Fernhill By Night would no longer compete at CCI-L events – instead focusing on CCI-S events. Since then Deborah Halliday’s 16-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding (Radolin x Argentina XII) has gone from strength-to-strength with seven top-10 CCI4*-S finishes in the last two years and nearly always leading after dressage.

Vicki Reynolds was on a horse at a young age. At 10 years old, she was given a Shetland pony and the rest, they say, is history. From there, she did a little bit of everything, from hunter/jumpers to galloping racehorses, breaking babies, and eventing. She eventually hung up her riding boots to dabble in motocross, bicycle racing, and rowing, which took her all over the United States and Europe. Incidentally, it was rowing which lead her back to horses.
There were only a few glimpses of sunshine during the Carolina International CIC and Horse Trials, but the 487 horses and riders made the best of the unseasonable weather and enjoyed four days of top competition. Set among the pine trees in Raeford, N.C. the Carolina Horse Park is home to the Carolina International which offers divisions from Training through the Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3*.
