It was a thrilling final day of competition for the 2017 Preliminary Challenge, presented this year by CWD, Devoucoux, Equine Insurance of California, CANTER, CARMA, and Professional’s Choice. It began with cross country and concluded with a show jumping finale in front of a sold out crowd as both divisions battled it out for their piece of the $15,000 purse. Ultimately it was Mallory Hogan and Rebecca Braitling who came out on top.

The Spring Event at Woodside was buzzing with activity today as competitors took to the dressage arenas to earn their first scores of the weekend, including the forty-seven entrants in the Preliminary Challenge, which is presented this year by CWD, Devoucoux, Equine Insurance of California, CANTER, CARMA, and Professional’s Choice. At the end of the day, Leslie LaBraque and Erin Kellerhouse lead the rider and horse divisions, respectively.

Woodside, CA, May 17, 2016 - The much anticipated Preliminary Challenge returns to the Spring Event at Woodside, May 26-28, for the ninth consecutive year. Helen Bouscaren and her own Thoroughbred gelding, Ben claimed victory today in the Adequan USEA Gold Cup Advanced division at Woodside International. After the conclusion of the Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3* division yesterday, just four combinations competed for the Advanced Division Title today.

Ian Stark’s CIC3* cross-country course was testing to all horse and rider combinations with just two double clear rounds today in the Adequan USEA Gold Cup division at Woodside International. James Alliston and Parker were the first pair around the course clear and inside the time, followed by Mary Burke and Prince William.

Frankie Thieriot Stutes and The Chatwin Group’s German Warmblood, Chatwin charged into the early lead after an accurate dressage test this afternoon in the Adequan USEA Gold Cup CIC3* division at Woodside International. Laying down a 41.8 on the flat, the pair held a nearly three-point lead over second place contenders Jordan Lindstedt and her own Hanoverian gelding, Revitavet Capato, who earned a 44.7.

Lauren Billys and the Purdy Syndicate's Castle Larchfield Purdy held a 4.6-point lead before the cross-country phase of the Adequan USEA Gold Cup and PRO Tour Series CIC3* at the Woodside International Horse Trials, and she used every bit of that lead to eke out her victory over James Alliston on his own Tivoli. Billys added 4.4 time penalties, to win by just .2 penalties.

Lauren Billys has only been riding her mount Castle Larchfield Purdy for a little more than a year, but she's made that year a productive one. At last year's Woodside International the pair won the CIC2*, and this year, with a lead going into the decisive cross-country phase, they look ready to take the blue ribbon in the Adequan USEA Gold Cup and PRO Tour Series CIC3*.Billys and Castle Larchfield Purdy took the lead in dressage, scoring 53.1 penalties, ahead of James Alliston on Tivoli (53.7) and Mary Burke on Prince William (55.7).

Riders from around the West Coast will make the competition top-class at the Woodside International Horse Trials, Oct. 2-4, at the Horse Park At Woodside. The event will offer three international divisions - the Adequan USEA Gold Cup and PRO Tour Series CIC3*, the CIC2* and the CIC1*.
