The United States Eventing Association (USEA) and the Virginia Horse Trials (VHT) are pleased to announce that the USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Championship will return to the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Va. in May 2017.
“The USEA is thrilled to have the Intercollegiate Championship return to The Virginia Horse Trials next year,” said USEA CEO Rob Burk. “We were so pleased with how smoothly the inaugural competition went thanks to Andy Bowles and the rest of his incredible team. This top class facility is an ideal place to let the championship grow, and we look forward to seeing how much bigger and better it can be in 2017.”
The inaugural Intercollegiate Eventing Championship took place May 27-29, 2016 during the Virginia Horse Trials. Attendance was strong, with 37 students from ten colleges and universities forming ten competing teams.
The competition was close, with less than 10 points separating the top four teams and the University of Georgia Red Team narrowly securing the win on the final day. UGA also won the Spirit Award, receiving a refund on entries and setting a high bar for school pride in years to come.
“The key criteria this year were fun and team interaction. I think we accomplished that and it felt like a proper team competition, not just an add on to a horse trials. It was a good competition and the spirit and the way the students acted as teams was great,” said VHT organizer Andy Bowles.
The inaugural Championship was deemed a great success and many more colleges and universities are expected to attend next year. USEA and VHT look forward to developing the program further and boosting the Championship to a new level by securing additional prizes and offering social and educational functions for students.
“I’m keen on the Intercollegiate program, and to be part of it is a good thing for VHT,” Bowles said. “We want to keep the students involved in the sport rather than lose them during college. The base we’ve got is extremely strong and is something to build on.”
About the USEA Intercollegiate Program

Originally proposed with input from the Intercollegiate Eventing League, the program was established to provide a framework on which Eventing teams and individual competition could flourish at universities and colleges across the country.
